The military and Chrohn's disease?
My daughter has been in the United States Coast Guard going on 2 years. In the past couple months she has been diagnosed with Chrohn's disease after a brief stay in the hospital with sever stomach pains. She had her medical review today and they have said there is a very good possibility she will be discharged, she even had to sign the paperwork for such. She is horribly upset. If there anyway that she can fight this at all? And maybe fight isn't the word, but she want to stay in the CG. The Commander said she would have to go 6 months without a flare up then she may be able to stay in. Is there anything else she can do to help? Is there anyway she would be able to go into "A" school and train for another, less stressful position--she is a fireman now. They made it sound pretty hopeless, is that the case?
Thank you for your answers.
I am not coming down on ANYBODY about anything-she wants to stay in the military if there is any possible way. That is my question--JERK!

My step-son has Crohn's, it is a nasty disease. As a young teenager he had 5 colonoscopies, trust me, that was not fun or easy. He is in remission now and is fine but if it flares up, he can become quite ill again. That is an automatic DQ for anyone trying to join and those already in... It would be very difficult to stay in the military. There really isn't a "less stress" position for any of the rates in the Coast Guard. As rank goes up, so does responsibility & stress. Fireman is only an E-3 (Same rank as my son, so I am not condemning her position) but the training for any Petty officer job is going to be stressful and any job a Petty Officer has to do is stressful. From Rescue Swimmer to Yeoman to Machinist Mate to Marine Science Tech to Food Specialist, they all have their stressers and their down time. She will have a very difficult fight ahead of her to stay in the CG.
I do wish her all the best in health and her future. But I'm not sure how much luck she will have staying in the service.

Sorry, but it is not worth the fight. Chron's is a debilitating disease that will be with her the rest of her life. She may go for months without any issues (remission) and then it could flare up and she could be out of work for months on end. There is no way that the military can accommodate something like that, nor should they have to.
And let's face it... life in the military, even the Coast Guard, can and will be stressful.
One of my friends daughter's was diagnosed at age 10. Her longest period of remission was a year and her longest hospital stay was 2 months. Her disease, her meds and her treatment are costly and interfere with her trying to have a somewhat normal teenage life.

Yet another ding-a-ling that can't comprehend what was written. No where did the poster say anything about the Army.

If the military wants to discharge her, I don't think there's really anything she can do. They could put her on medication for chrohn's disease though and that could really limit the number of flare ups she has.
