If I inherit an economy that is supposedly teetering on the edge?
of a cliff and I go ahead and push it off, wouldn't you think I was doing the "best I could" given the situation? I mean after all it isn't teetering anymore, so I am doing good right?

The GDP of the USA is about 5x that of China's, the second largest economy. Sure, there are a lot of short term and long term problems. Some systemic, some which have easy solutions.
But this economy is hardly "off the edge" whether or not you are a Bush fan or an Obama fan

the economy was clearly falling fast, far from the top of the cliff already, when obama inherited it...
the stock market has recovered, GDP has recoverd, and unemployment stopped the free fall...
could it be better, yep... but it could be a lot worse too, and it looked like it would be for a while...
it was tettering in Sept. 08 and fell off in November... Obama didn't take office until January in mid freefall...
