Why is it that multiculturalism seems to work so much better in the US than in Europe?

Please don't mistake this as some kind of implication that America is better than other countries. As an American, I agree with those who may say that many people in my country are quite arrogant and have a sort of "supremacist" view of our country and our culture. I think a lot of us (Americans) could all benefit by learning a little humility. I've only posted this question because it seems to me that European countries tend to have a lot more problems with multiculturalism than America. Is this because America has always been more or less multicultural, and has (for the most part) always been been populated by a mix of people whose ancestors were from this country, that country, and the other country? Or am I completely wrong in my assumptions in the first place? What country are you from, and what are your thoughts? Thanks, and have a great day.

Im British and multiculturalism doesn't work well here, for the same reason that the Chinese or Japanese etc would not be happy about importing so many people that their culture is subsumed wholesale by other cultures, their kids become the only Japanese kids etc in their school' and they end up as am ethnic minority in parts of their own country. In fact interestingly it is only in some western countries that mass immigration whereby people are allowed to settle permanently is permitted. Though that's changing as European countries which have allowed this are now reverting to the very restrictive immigration policies of the past -like the rest of the world. And the difference between multiculturalism in Europe and America is that we are the natives here and have our own cultural heritage spanning thousands of years.

    Edit: Hey Dough boy

Slavery was going on in Africa for about 2000 years before some (About 7) European countries became involved in the slave trade. And they were overwhelming bought from other Africans who owned slaves, and were exchanged them in return for technology such as firearms. etc. And the only reason they did that, is because at around about that time slavery had become illegal in Europe and "white" guys were no longer allowed enslave anybody "white guys or otherwise in their own countries. And interestingly they had slavery in the middle up till the mid twentieth century, in fact it was still permitted in some places such as Yemen till the late 1960s.

That involved that involved enslaving non Muslims especially Africans. In fact until Europe became powerful they were also enslaving "white" people. In fact up till the 20th century it is estimated that they enslaved about 7 million European people who mostly came from southern Europe. A lot of my family were killed in WW2 by the Nazis and the city which i come from was turned into a giant hole in the ground, and that was far more recent than 150 years ago.

However i don't hate German, people or use that as a means of playing the victim. It seems as though some people seem to have cultivated a culture whereby "white" people are demonized and judged by a different standard to people of a different colour. And that is some how used as a means of justifying mass immigration into Europe, and deriding the culture and history of European peoples. The Japanese killed 10 of millions of people across east asia in WW2, which is a lot more recent than the slave trade which was hundreds of years ago, however nobody criticizes them for having a country which is 99 percent Japanese; and wishing to preserve their culture and heritage.

And we are nowhere near as restrictive on immigration as well them and well everybody else in the non western world. We just wish to limit immigration to preserve our cultures and ways of life. And expect immigrants do as we do rather than marginalizing our own cultures.

If I were complaining as DoughBoy i would now be talking that i hate the germans, the french, the english and all other Europeans Countries because all of them had wars against each others and everyone of every country there, killed everykind of ethnic groups...

and i'm not claiming myself as the 'victim of world'...ok, lets see now.

    I'm Brazilian.

We have one of the greatest european population outside Europe. 50% of ppl are caucasian and the other are Native Indians and Nigers. I think that multiculturalism seems to work better because here we are on places called 'United States, Mexico, Brazil'...you know? And all the ppl here are the ones that makes these places exist.

The only real citizens of America are the native Indians.

We all have come here, so we dont have good reasons to be fighting.

If I were an european i would care about my country because all the history of my family happened on that place, and that place is what it is now because of my ancestors spilled blood on many wars and revolutions....

Now you complain about illegal immigration, but not about the american italian presence (the ones who came as immigrants a long time ago).

Thats the diference. Did you understand my logics?

Source(s): I'm an engrish speaker, sorry.

America is a melting pot. We were founded by Europeans, but even way back then, their were people of different races in the country to begin with.

After America abolished slavery, there were many freed black people and natives. Our Southern border is Mexico, yet another heritage.

I believe our acceptance of multiculturalism also has to do with the way our constitution and laws read. People of all walks of life are protected under our constitution, I can't really speak on other countries, because I'm not from them. I know that we are more accepting of other cultures, but our country isn't all that great at it either. We do have lawsuits regarding Mosques, religion in schools, etc.
