My dog's medicine must taste terrible, anyone else have this happen?
She is on Tramadol and Rimadyl for her ruptured cruciate ligament. Even though the Tramadol is a small pill tablet (the Rimadyl is much bigger), she'll eat around the cheese or treat and leave---you guessed it--one pill on the floor.
However she has no problem with the Rimadyl. I wonder what's going on here, if the Tramadol just is a terrible tasting pill or what. I am running out of ideas to put her pill in and I am afraid she will get used to these treats and not eat (not a terrible thing since she is overweight by about 20% of her body weight, 65 lbs and she is a lab/basset/staffordshire terrier mix and is quite short and fat).
Feeding my dog these pills is going to drive me crazy.

Dogs just don't like being pilled and yes, some of them DO taste AWFUL! I accidentally got a taste of my cat's FLAVORED oral medication the other day and it made me want to vomit.
Anyway - I just open my dogs mouth, stick the pill on the back of his tongue, hold his mouth shut until he swallows... massage the throat to stimulate swallowing. I usually follow up with a treat. But you don't have to.

Been there... done that...
How much post-op is she???
I have one on Tramadol, antihistamine, Piroxicam, Citrucel and an acidophilus probiotic capsule.
I have to feed these to my girl for her cancer of the soft palate twice a day.
You need to remind yourself that failure is NOT an option. You love your dog. You must do whatever it takes to take good care of her.
You can purchase special pill pockets if you don't like any of my suggestions below.
You can cut a piece of cheese just bite size and make a hole inside it for the pill.
You can get some raw liver and cut slices the right side to completely wrap around the pill.
You can scramble an egg and cut rectangles the right size to wrap up the pill.
You can cut a piece of hotdog, make a hole in the center and insert the pill.
You don't make it so big that it's more than one bite. If you enclose it right, the pocket will be just bigger than the pill.
If she still spits the pill, you lift her upper jaw using her teeth so her head tips back. You drop the pill so it falls into the deepest part of the throat to the BACK of the tongue. Then you lift the lower jaw and stroke her neck. If needed, you can take the pill in your hand and put your hand way down her throat to get the pill to the back of the tongue manually and then close the jaw.
Don't tell me you can't do it. It's your job to do it whatever way works. If a 69 year old woman can do this with a 100# great pyrenees, than you can do it with YOUR dog. -!-

To give a pill open the dogs mouth and put the pill behind the tong close mouth and hold shut and rub the dogs throat area. This will make the dog swallow.
Another way I found for the dog that still spits out the pill is to take some sandwich cheese and make 3 balls. 2 of the balls will be plain cheese and one will have the pill in it. First give her a plain cheese ball and then give her the one with the pill in it and immediately hold the second cheese ball in front of her to see. It has been my experience that once the dog see's the third cheese ball it will swallow the one with the cheese/pill quickly so she can have the next one without thinking about tasting for the pill. Sometimes you have to think ahead of these dogs.

My wife will sometimes use a piece of hot dog. Try breaking it up and put the pill in one and give all the pieces at once. You might get lucky and she'll eat it. If all else fails, she'll just push it down with her finger until the dog swallows it. I know it sounds cruel but it really isn't. You can also grind the pill up and put it in the dog's wet food. Don't mix it up in all the food but keep it fairly concentrated so if he/she does happen to taste it, it'll probably won't be for long and too late to spit it out. Your vet may have another alternative medicine, a liquid perhaps. Good luck.

Yes my black lab would not take a pill for the life of her. but we did find a way for her to get a pill. we would take a hot dog and cut it into a inch and a half and make a "X" with a little knife. Then stuff the pill in there when she cant see. Show her the treat get her excited to eat it and then give it to her rllly quick were she barly chews the hot dog. sometimes that wouldnt work and if we tried that for a couple of times and other stuff we would have to ppl one opening her mouth and the other put the pill in her mouth and put somee water in her mouth. IK it sounds horrible and cruel but sometimes it was the only way for her to take the pill. Hoped that helped(:

You have to hide the pills really well in the treats. Don't let your dog see you put the pill in there. If they know the treat has a pill in it, they'll only eat the treat and not the pill too. I use Pill Pockets. My dog does the same thing.

Well... if she wont eat them with treats either find some wet dog food and place them in it and see if she will eat them or you will have to take some more drastic measures. We had this same problem with my dog (a long hair dachshund), he wouldn't eat the pills no matter what we put them in... So we had to butter them up, hold his mouth open and drop them to the back of his throat. Of course he hated that so we had to reward him with more treats...
Hopefully you can find something that will disguise the pill odor so he will eat them... the alternative is not fun for anyone... especially your dog.

my dog does the same thing with pills eat the treat and spit out the pill lol. shoving it down his throat is not an option. what i had to do was buy a pill grinder(cheap little thing at a phamarcy) gind up the pill really good and stir it into his food. if your dog eats only kibble you will have to give him a little wet food as a treat, or maybe a little plain yogurt. with mine i have to put him outside and mix it in cuz if he sees me putting it in he won't eat it. good luck

Yes dogs dont like taking pills their just like little kids in some ways. I find that hiding my dogs pills in some peanut butter helps her to take her pills. She loves peanut butter and it gets stuck in the top of her mouth so then she works her tongue to get the peanutbutter off the top of her mouth and it forces her to swallow her pills

Good point. I went to lunch with this woman. We went to McDonald's. She had a vege burger and said "this tastes terrible" and broke off a bit for me to try. Reluctantly, I tasted it but felt so sick she had shared it with me. I wish some people kept somethings to themselves. You can share too much.
