Most manufacturers tell you that it is safe to use the active brush roll of their vacuum on bare floor surfaces, however, do you really want to take that chance? Floor coverings are expensive to repair or replace, it it better to be safe than sorry and always turn off the brush roll before venturing onto bare floor surfaces. An active brush roll tends to scatter larger debris, such as cat litter, rather than pick it up. In fact, the best way to vacuum a bare floor is with a hose and wand with a non-motorized brush. The manual brush gently loosens dust and debris for the vacuum to suck up.
