What is the punishment for assaulting a policeman (UK)?

I am curious to know as, on tv, it is made out to be a serious matter but when my drug dealer scumbag neighbour did it (and was CS gas sprayed) he was released pretty much straight away.

He was presumably released on bail. You don't know what will happen to him as things take their course and without knowing more about the circumstances, none of us can venture an opinion. For example, it might be argued in court that in spraying your neighbour with CS gas the police were going outside the scope of their authority and therefore a charge of assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty could be thrown out. On the other hand, he might simply be charged with assaulting the individual concerned, just as if he had assaulted you or me, which puts things on a lesser footing. Where a police officer acting in the course of his duty is assaulted and the person assaulting him is convicted, the court will normally consider a community penalty and compensation. However, in many cases the intervention of the police occurs because a more serious crime is being committed, and the matter of assaulting a police officer becomes incidental to the main charge.
