why are pre built computers cheaper than custom built ones?

i wanted a computer so i thought that making my own would be better but it looks like there more expensive like that with there parts but when you see other computers (pre built) there parts all cost way more than the computer itself does like i looked at the mother board of this computer that was 400 and the motherboard alone was 120 and it had the i5 processor which is bout the same price and then the os would be like 100 so bout round  340 so leaveing the cables the hdd dvd/rw ram etc left

there are many reasons, but generally it come down to cost of the components and cost of building.
Branded (pre-built) machines are built on an assembly line, often using cheap labour. The cost of components is cheap as they buy in huge quantities and get bulk discounts. Microsoft almost give away the Windows OS, you may pay over 100 £/$/€ for it, the manufacturer of a branded PC pays less than 10. 
Making your own is better but does cost more. 
Unless you are making your machine from the same components as a branded machine you will get a better deal. You will always buy exactly what you want, no compromises, you will choose better branded items, quality built for the consumer market, and make better informed choices of hardware to suit your needs. Plus it is more fun and far more satisfying to say "I built this".
