Problem with dog and hedgehog?
I bought a young hedgehog about two weeks ago. He and I are bonding fine, but I'm having trouble with my five year old sheltie-dachshund mix. She jumps up on me when I'm holding the hedgehog and when I put my hands down for her to sniff him, she tries to scrabble him. She's always been very protective of me, and I'm worried she'll hurt the hedgehog. What should I do to help my hedgehog and dog get along? I don't want to be worried about them getting in a fight for forever.

So, let me get this straight....you're worried about the Hedgehog and your dog getting in a fight? The dog sees this animal as FOOD and it's up to you to keep your little Hedgehog safe. You have a few options here. You can spend time in your room with the door closed so the dog can't hurt the Hedgehog. You can teach the dog the *be gentle* command but still keep the Hedgehog safe. Last but not least, you can buy a pair of teeny tiny boxing gloves for the Hedgehog and let them duke it out, but I don't think this option will work very well.

They're not going to get along. Ever. Keep them apart from each other. Put the dog in another room when you're interacting with the hedgehog. Make sure the hedgehog's cage is dog-proof. You can have dogs and hedgehogs at the same time, but they can't be friends. You've got to keep them apart.

Dogs are predators, hedgehogs are prey!
Your dog will never learn to "get along" with a prey animal!
If you want your hedgehog to live you will HAVE to keep the dog away from it.
She's not protecting you from it, she's not a little human in a fur suit, on top of all that, she's half Dachshund, they were bred to hunt things like hedgehogs.

Those dogs have a high prey drive that you aren't going to be able to correct. Just let the hedgie ball up and prick her nose and I'm sure she will be more wary of him and may spend less time trying to get to him if she thinks she'll get a face full of spines every time. It isn't cruel because the spines can't damage your dog, they'll just show her the hedgehog can defend himself. They will likely never get along, just keep them apart. it will be less stressful for the hedgehog to be kept apart from a dog that wants to eat him and it will be less stressful for the dog because she won't be freaking out thinking she just had to get to that spiny thing. =) Good luck!

The daschund was bred to be a vermin dog, so that might be part of your problem. I would accept that they may never get along. The simplest solution is to put your dog away when you are interacting with your hedgehog. This will keep everyone safe.

uh-oh. why not just get a fox to guard your hen-house?
Did you not realize that dachshunds were bred for the specific purpose of hunting hedgehogs? I mean, your dog is hard-wired to go after hedgehogs, and will not rest until the work is done.
The part about "not resting" is figurative of course -- no dog is going to lose sleep over a hedgehog. But his waking hours will be spent plotting..........

Omg, dear, The Dachshund part of your dog is a hound. Bred to flush badgers. Bred to kill vermin.
There is NOTHING you can do! It is in the *drive*. It is in the genetics. Centuries of genetics! Which cannot be altered.
Don't even try this. If you do, your dog is going to be faster than you and that hedgehog will become very dead.
