what are the steps a sole propreitor would have to take in order to hire employees?

Is the process different if its a part time or full time worker?

how about for a contractor rather than employee?

    For an Employee:

    You need to have a state & federal Employer Identifcation number, if you don't have one already

    You need to have workers comp insurance, unless you are Texas

    - Texas does not require you to have workers comp insurance but if there is an accident, the company is still responsible.

    For a contractor = there is no requirement.

    At year end you will need to submit a 1099. If you don't want your SSN on this form, you need to get an EIN.
