Why does my Blaupunkt Montreal only work in MW and LW?

I recently fitted on old Blaupunkt radio cassette player into my old Peugeot. I traced and bought an adapter, fitted the wires according to the diagram, switched on and it worked perfectly, didn't require the code although I have it if needed. I drove across the county to see my son, listening to FM all the way. Great, I thought. However, when I set off for home, the radio came on for a second or so then stopped although the display remained. MW and LW work but FM only works for about a second, unless I hold in the button with the ^ (with a similar symbol reversed beneath it). I suppose I could put a piece of duct tape over the button but I would rather have it back as it was. I might end up having to buy a manual but if anyone can advise me, I would be grateful.

Update:

Thanks for answering, Fred, but the aerial is all right. I get reception but as I say, on VHF I have to hold in a button, which is inconvenient while driving! If I knew what the symbol represented, I might be able to work out what needs doing.

Update 2:

Thanks for answering, Fred, but the aerial is all right. I get reception but as I say, on VHF I have to hold in a button, which is inconvenient while driving! If I knew what the symbol represented, I might be able to work out what needs doing. And thanks for the link to Lidl's. If I had known about that, I might not have spent my time searching for an adapter for the Blaupunkt.

Update 3:

Thanks too, G. I went to the car today after not using it for a few days and the radio came on and stayed on, so if there is a fault, it is intermittent. It could be as you suggest and perhaps the heat might affect it. I will continue to monitor it. I wish I knew what the controls meant without having to purchase a manual.

Update 4:

Sorry Fred, I didn't acknowledge you as suggesting the fault might be a flexing circuit board. What I find strange is that the VHF stations. came on for a second then stopped although the display remained. Anyway it's working now so keep my fingers crossed. .

Check the wiring, something may have come loose on the aerial, if it needs to be repaired it would probably cost more than it's worth.

A new modern CD & MP3 player would only cost from £30, see link for a Lidl example

    Edit

It's likely that pushing the button makes the circuit board in the radio flex slightly, fixing an open circuit. If you could take the radio apart, discover the crack or bad solder joint then re-solder it it may be possible to get it working properly. (Then you have to put it all back together again)

If the button you say is faulty then it may be worth while saving your most listened to FM stations on pre-set.

You usually have numbers like 1-2-3-4-5

In most cases once you have selected your station and then hold down e.g. 1 (you may hear a beep after a short delay) then your station can be pre-set.

Having failed pre-sets then the unit may be faulty.
