Can I haggle on a car price (UK)?

I'm buying a second hand car from a trader - should I make a lower offer than the price displayed, and if so what sort of percentage less should I offer?

Update:

Asking price is £8990

Always. Start at a price far lower than you really expect to pay, and have a "walk-away" price in your head that you'll walk out the showroom if you can't get the car down to that price.

From a dealer, my "walk away" price is at least 10% off so for that car I'd pay no more than £8,000, and I'd probably offer £6,995 initially.

Bear in mind the dealer will have bought the car either at an auction or taken as a trade in probably for around £6,500.

If he won't play ball, walk away, there are thousands of cars out there and you need to be tough.

Yes of course you can, always try to get a reduction, they even expect you to, hence they put some extra on the cost, so in the end they are not losing out. i'm not sure as to what % but i would try 25%. One thing always to remember, whatever you may be haggling for, not just cars.

the seller will always end up making a profit, or he just will Not sell it. I have haggled in so many parts of the world, for some many various items, so i do know what i am talking about.

Just seen your extra remark, i would suggest going in with a £7,000 starting price, and work from that. Good Luck

If it's second hand yes my dad is brilliant at this he does it all the time. He just finds faults with the car and asks for money off because of it. Garages are sneaky they sold me a broken car! There is a car spotter number you can text to see if the price they're charging it not over the top. I dont know it i think its calle car spotter.

Start at £7500 plus a full MOT 12 months Road Tax and tank of fuel.

    Posting the price would help.

But if the price of the car was 6950, it would be sensible to offer 6500 or 6300

10% is usually a fair haggle - private or trade on used vehicles.

Unless it's stupidly over inflated - if it is...walk away. Buy cars with your head - not your heart.
