Hollywood isn't a sentient entity, so it doesn't come up with ideas at all. As for the individuals that comprise the industry, there are many original ideas out there, and some *do* go into production. It just so happens that more people these days pay to see those sequels and remakes you're talking about, therefore making them fairly safe bets for studios to put into production. Remakes of past works and adaptations of things like tween books and comic books just happen to be a current trend (similar to past trends like westerns, crime movies, etc.), it's just different in the sense that there is a lot of material to work with, so it may last a while.

Source(s): I don't think they have a problem with coming up with new ideas. Just look at all the new books that are written every year.
