What are some good whiskies that aren't too expensive?

That you might find in a UK pub? I'm looking to try new drinks and wouldn't mind giving whisky a go.

Yesterday I had one called Jameson Irish Whiskey (not overly keen on) and Southern Comfort (delicious). Are these good whiskies?

Thanks

jameson's is alright, soco is whiskey flavored syrup. For the money my favorites are:

    Canadian

Wiser's White Label~$16 (one of the best for the money. Super smooth, great for mixing or have it neat).

Black Velvet~$12 pretty foul unless mixed.

    Bourbon:

    Ezra B. 12 Year Single Barrel~$25

Elijah Craig 12 year old Bouron~$20

    Bulleit Bourbon~$27

    Irish Whiskey

    Feckin Irish Whiskey~$17

Red Breast 12 year old~$50 Not cheap, but amazing.

    Scotch

I don't drink scotch unless someone else is paying, i've never found it to be worth the premium it commands over other whiskies.

The most popular single malts available in pubs will be Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie. Southern Comfort is whisky based but has so much additional flavouring that it really should be considered a liqueur. If you are going to drink whisky with a mixer, then a blended whisky like Johnny Walker or Teachers or Bells will be fine, as most of the flavour will come from the mixer, and only an overtone will come from the whisky itself.

Jameson is one of my favourite whiskey's.

Remember there are 4 different types of whiskey

    Irish

    Scotch

    Rye(canadian)

    Bourban (american)

These all have very different characteristics.

For example Irish the grain is close kilned, whereas scotch its an open kiln which gives scotch a smokier flavour.

    My favourite whiskies are

    Jameson (irish)

Middleton (GORGEOUS IRISH, but damn expensive)

Bushmills and Black Bush (Irish but made in northern Ireland)

    Canadian Club

    Crown Royal (another canadian whiskey)

Southern comfort isn't a whiskey, its a whiskey based liquour.
