    WHOA!!!!!!!!!

    1. the FIRST thing you should do is take out the metal racks.

    2. vacuum or clean out all the little burnt/dried pieces of stuff on the bottom

    3. Using something like Easy-Off oven cleaner, spray that all over and let sit then wipe it off. Follow up with a rag and plain water until all residue is cleaned off. (I use Easy Off fume free formula.)

    4. NOW you may turn the Self Cleaning function on. If you don't do the above steps, you risk fire or severe smoking of your house. Why? Because all that residue, grease, etc will burn off in the high heat of the self cleaning cycle. The oven will lock itself until the cycle is complete, so don't freak out.

    5. After oven cools, you can go through with a wet rag and wipe off the remainder of residue

Depending on your stove, there may be a button that says self clean or a knob you have to switch. All you have to do is make sure the oven has nothing in it (no baking sheets, etc) and turn on self clean. Most ovens will lock, and will heat up to a high temperature. Some will beep when you're done. It's a great feature to have, and a lot easier than cleaning it yourself! Make sure you look up your oven make/model online - you might be able to find a user manual that will give you more detailed instructions.

There's a latch at the top--slide it over to lock the oven door. Then turn the setting to 'clean.' Then go away for a while, because it gets really hot and burns off all the crud and it -will- smell like burning.

It should stop and cool down on its own. When it's cool, you unlock it and sweep out all the bits of crud that were burned off of the racks.

Move the handle to lock position and then set to clean. About 3 hours should do it. After it cools you can wipe out the ashes.

Find the make and model of your oven then look in the instruction manual.
