Christians, is it sacrilege to put a cross on an animals grave?

People often put a cross, marker, and artificial flowers along the highway at the site of a fatal accident, to honor and remember those lost in the tragedy. Today I passed such a marker, but it was for a horse killed in an accident, There was a cross on it, and I wondered how Christians would react to that.

I think it shows immense respect for God's other creations, and I personally believe that animals have souls as well, even if their consciousness/intellect isn't the same. Anyways, it is a symbol of love and even though I am not christian anymore, it would make me smile knowing that there was still compassion strong enough to cross the bounds of species.

I'm not a Christian but I'm all for whatever gives you comfort. I can't imagine why anyone would not feel that way.
