Is it safe to go to the dentist while pregnant?
I am six months pregnant and I want to know if it's safe to replace a missing dental filling? It would only be local anesthesia. I've only heard of problems occurring if the procedure requires full sedation, but I don't want my little girl to be screwed up just because I didn't ask.

While I was pregnant, I had to have a lot of dental work done. My ob/gyn wrote a note to my dentist, absolutely forbidding the use of epinephrine, which is used in novocaine to keep the numbness localized. You should have your ob/gyn contact your dentist immediately, for a consultation.
The epinephrine can cause tachycardia (racing heartbeat) in your growing child. You can have injections of a numbing agent, as long as there is no epinephrine in the injection. You probably will need extra injections to keep the numbness going, but at least your baby won't be affected.

I know my dentist wouldn't replace a dental filling (partly fallen out) when I was pregnant and he only does local anesthesia. They do as little work as possible while you are pregnant other than cleanings or process' needed to prevent/reduce infection. Infection in other parts of the body have been known to lead to miscarriage.

Check with your doctor but mine said that necessary dental care was fine. He just said to avoid anything that could wait. A dental filling should not wait especially if you are having any pain. Just let the dentist know your pregnant. Also my doctor said even the xrays were fine at the dentist because they will cover your belly.

Call the office. Some dentists have things they can do and others will wait until you give birth.
