Why is my house swarming with ants and how do I fix it?

We had some ant trouble when we first moved into our home two years ago but it was easily fixed. It's brand new. Today I opened my dishwasher and it was full of ants. There are ants all around the back and front doors too. I'm in the south and today was much warmer than normal. Is it the heat? I just cleaned my home yesterday including my baseboards. I didn't notice an ant at all. How can I fix it?

Go buy some ant baits. I use something called Terra or Terro, it's in an orange package. It's a sweet syrupy substance that attracts ants which they take back to there den and it in turn kills the other ants because ants are carnivores. It works like a charm and you can get it just about anywhere.

When dealing with ants the best thing to do is observe them for a few minutes-all ants lay a pheromone trail to food sources etc (this is why you will often see ants walking in lines) and this trail will invariably lead you to their harbourage (nest) if you are patient enough.

As with all insects it is important that you deal with the nest so look for small mounds of sand by door jambs/behind units and generally outside-if you locate these then this is where the nest is likely to be.

Buy a residual ant powder (preferably with bendiocarb or permethrin) and lightly dust around the entrance to the nest-many people chuck loads down-all this does is solidifies and the ants walk all over it-you want the dust to stick to the ants legs so they can walk it into the nest.

Along with a few strategically placed gel baits this should sort the problem for you.

There are lots of different kinds of ants that are attracted to different things. You may need to change your bait/poison. I get different ants at different seasons and during different years. I prefer non-toxic methods of dealing with them and I start by removing whatever they are attracted to. The and control purchased product I prefer is Terro, but for some ants it is not effective. I live in the country and there are literally dozens of different kinds of ants on the property, when I was a kid watching ant wars was a form of entertainment. I mostly cohabitate on the property, but when they start coming in the house I have to take action. Right now the tiny ants I have coming in are going for the dog and cat food. I try to keep my feeding areas as clean as possible, and rig a trap every day by filling the cat food can with water and a few drops of dishsoap which I leave on a corner of the counter where the animals can't reach it. After a day on the counter, the can us usually full of dead ants, who are attracted to the cat food slime on the can, touch the soapy water and fall in and drown. The dishsoap changes the surface tension of the water, just a few drops of soap, not enough for the smell to put them off. If the ants are coming for sweets you can use the same sort of trap baited with juice or crushed fruit in water and dishsoap. As an aside, knats cannot resist a little white wine with dishsoap, if you get knats in the kitchen it's an easy fix. If you don't have wine cider vinegar works almost as well, juice is less effective. And the best mosquito repellant is catnip. A handful of catnip leaves rubbed on the exposed parts of your body will keep mosquitos and many other insects away. And your cat will think you are wonderful %*).

Some ants like sugar and some like greasy foods. The liquid you put out might have been Terro that has sugar in it. The ants that like greasy foods do not go for it. Pic and Combat are for ants that like the greasy foods. The Combat can be found in grocery stores and places that sell bug sprays.

Put in ant traps around the house where the ants carry the poison back to the nest so all the ants inside eat it and die.

Spray the outside of the house around the hole house to stop new ants from coming in.

  • (are they little black ants?) i also live in the south and have dealt with ants in my mothers house, my sisters and my own. i have noticed that they do come in when it gets hot and/or dry outside, and what all of us have figured out is that if we water our plants around the house(which at that same time are wilted and need to be watered) they go away again. we just assume that they're thirsty and need to get the water back to their colony.

Call an exterminator! The Terro does work but it can take a week or two before they go away based on my experience with the product.
