  • How can we handle the neighbors children?

We live in a large neighborhood with small houses. Most families let their kids ages 5 and 6 play alone outside without supervision. We live right by a common lot. We frequently have children playing in that lot but many times, they get on our property. We wouldn't necessarily mind but we have some bushes and plants that could really hurt if you run into them. A couple of weeks ago, I found some kids in them throwing balls onto our house. My husband went out and firmly told them to stop. Just last night, they were there again and we told them to stay on the common property. Well, seconds later, the father of one of the kids came over and told us we were being too mean to the kids and that we needed to come get the parents instead of yelling at the kids. The problem is, is that the parents are NEVER outside and we had no clue where they were they lived or who they were. I want to be at peace with my neighbors. So, are we justified in what we do? I am already upset because when I take my own 6 year old outside, the kids come and play with our things and I end up babysitting kids I don't even know. I usually tell them we are having family time and tell them to play elsewhere. These kids seem too young to play outside alone without supervision but I know it's legal to do. What is the proper action here? Do I tell the child to take me to their home so I can talk to their parents (could be a very long way away) or do we just keep up what we are doing? I don't want anyone to get hurt and that's why we keep doing this. They just seem to think that we don't want them in our yard. Thanks!

  • What do I do when neighbor gave nicer Christmas gifts?

My neighbor came and gave my husband and I and my daughter Christmas gifts yesterday. I had gotten her something too. Mine was A LOT less. In fact, it was a homemade gift for her and a small gift for her daughter. What she got us was ultra nice and got my daughter 5 things! We haven't spent too much time together this year (haven't seen her since the kids went Trick or Treating) so I thought I did the right thing. Now I feel guilty. Is it tacky to give another gift or should I let it go?

  • Alternative radio song just heard?

Just heard a song on our alternative radio channel that I really liked. Kind of had the vibe of Simon and garfunkle meets queen. There was a lot of drums in the background and they kept saying something along the lines, "this is what I stand for."

    Please help! Thanks!

  • Stopped taking thyroid meds for 6 days, started back...now what?

Okay, I stopped taking it because well, I got lazy. I called in the meds and kept forgetting to go pick it up. I live in a small town and didn't drive by the pharmacy. It was one of those...I gotta do that today. I noticed yesterday that I was extremely emotional, cried a lot, and am constantly cold (it's 77 in my house right now). So, how long will it take it to work? I know when I first started taking it 14 years ago, it took several weeks to kick in. Will this happen again? Was my body probably totally out of the substance or will it kick in quicker?

  • If I quit drinking diet soda and am supposed to sub. with tea, what sweetener should I use?

I really want to quit drinking diet sodas. I'm shamefully an addict and I know it's bad for me. I like water but not with a meal. I want something with taste. Our family loves tea...what sweetener should I use that is safe? I know the pink, blue, and yellow are supposedly not good. I don't want to use sugar and add calories so calorie free please. Any other fruity suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

  • Strawberry allergy to conventional fruit only?

A few weeks ago I bought some strawberries at the grocery store. I had an allergic reaction in my mouth and tongue. The same thing happened when I made a pbj for my daughter and took a bite. So, I made an appointment with my allergist (I suffer asthma and have urticaria). However, curiosity hit me when I pulled some strawberries out of the freezer that came from a local farm this past summer to give to my husband and daughter. I ate some and didn't even have a mild reaction at all. Does anyone have any suggestions to tell my allergist? Does anyone have any experience as to what this might be? I heard strawberry allergies are common but now I'm confused! Thanks.

  • Why is my house swarming with ants and how do I fix it?

We had some ant trouble when we first moved into our home two years ago but it was easily fixed. It's brand new. Today I opened my dishwasher and it was full of ants. There are ants all around the back and front doors too. I'm in the south and today was much warmer than normal. Is it the heat? I just cleaned my home yesterday including my baseboards. I didn't notice an ant at all. How can I fix it?

  • What are some vegetarian ways to use rosemary?

I am at a loss. My neighbor and I decided to grow two different gardens, hers herbs and mine veggies and we could swap. The veggies are a lot slower growing and we seem to have an overload of herbs. (although I have a ton of cucumbers). The last time I used rosemary I wasn't a veggie and used it on meats. Now I can't think of ways to use it. Thanks!

  • How can you tell if something contains lard?

I'm talking about things like canned beans, pie crusts, etc? I'm a newbie vegetarian and have read a lot about how people have found out there is lard in their food. I scan ingredients on these types of products and never see the word "lard" listed yet I have read online that they do in fact contain it. What am I looking for when I read an ingredients list?

  • How bad can allergies in kids be?

I offered to make cupcakes for my 3 year old daughters preschool Easter party today. Being vegetarian and not consuming much dairy and eggs, this wasn't hard for me to do because there are two kids in her room, one with a nut and dairy allergy and another with an egg allergy. I had an on hand recipe that I used this morning and was realizing that my kitchen is probably not totally free from this allergens (nuts especially). I made sure that I used clean dishes and washed my hands. I didn't eat a peanut butter, egg, and cheese sandwich while I was cooking and I know that this recipe is void of the ingredients. However, I used wooden spoons (that have been cleaned) and stored them near items in my fridge that would contain nuts. I called the moms of the kids and told them that my kitchen was not nut, dairy, and egg free but they assured me that they trusted me. Yet, I'm freaked out. I've heard some kids allergies can be so bad that if they smell it they could die. What's the normal for this? Any suggestions?

  • Vegetarians/Vegans: What meat substitute products do you like best for adults and kids?

We are dropping meat from our diet officially. We have been in transition for a few months now. Since we were eating meat one time a week/every two weeks I never purchased any of these. Of course I have had some Boca's and Morningstar products which I like. However, I'm interested in the more unique products like the veggie hotdogs, chicken, sausages? What items do your kids like? I have a three year old whose only meat product she likes is chicken nuggets. Thanks!
