How can I get my cats to share me?

Hi there, I'm the happy owner of two wonderful cats. One, Angel, has been with me for two years and is three. The other, Toby, showed up at the door one day and made himself part of our lives. Toby just got fixed yesterday. The vet says he's one to two years old.

Both cats are very sweet, but one will get aggressive with the other if I am giving attention to the other cat, and they compete for the "honor" of sleeping on my leg at night. How do I get them to share?

What you are experiencing is not at all uncommon. Cats love to claim things: resting places, boxes, food bowls and especially people. Angel obviously feels as though you belong to her since she has been with you the longest. Toby wants very much to become accepted by you as an equal with Angel. Even cats that have been raised as siblings have their spats when they don't feel they are getting their fair share of attention. I would suggest you put one of the cats in a room with food and water and a play toy while you play with the other. After a while you can switch cats and that way they will each feel as though they are very special to you. If they both want to sit on your lap you can always do what my daughter does, she puts one on her lap and puts the other one on she shoulder and pets them both. They are both getting the attention they want but don't feel like they are in competition for the same space. My daughter has trained the two cats that they each have a special space on her bed. One is on one side of her and the other is on the opposite side. They have adjusted to this situation and it has worked out very well for her. Good luck.

First off, cats are really pack animals, so they consider the other cats and you as part of the family. You probably did not introduce your cat properly to the home. If you read text book on cats, you will see that you just don't introduce a cat into the family by letting them just run around and get acquainted. You made realize that cats need to smell you first to except you. So it is recommend to put the new cat in another room, and do not open the doors for one to two weeks. Let them smell each other.

Now there is nothing you can do, it is about the Alpha male or female. Good Luck.
