Why do people care what the pope says?
His role in world politics is no different than the Ayatollah or other religious leaders (meaning they're largely marginal to the vast majority of the world). So why do people care when the pope makes a speech in Germany about upholding "traditional values"? At most he's talking specifically to a small percentage of people - at most he's actually trying to say that his religion is better than somebody else's with absolutely nothing to back it up.
He may be following in the footsteps of Peter - but most of the New Testament was written by Paul (whom the other disciples disliked greatly) so I don't see how that's particularly relevant.
There are hundreds if not thousands of different cultures and they all have different systems of morality. For the pope to claim a universal morality flies in the face of everything that we in "the West" value - such as tolerance, democracy, human rights, etc.
Every religion claims to be "the one true religion" so that's a horribly flawed argument. Logic would dictate that we claim to be members of every religion so that when we die we've got all our bases covered. In terms of argumentation - religion is a horrible concept (note that I'm not saying religion is bad, just that it can't exist in the realm of logic).
The pope may have had social and political power hundreds of years ago but not today. There are few, if any, countries that base policy on what the Vatican has to say. It seems that the pope is pushing an agenda that hasn't been relevant in hundreds of years.
Assuming that each of the "billion Catholics" is an actual believer and that 16% is accurate - that's still a low percentage. If you walked into a room of 100 people and spoke with only 16 but claimed to be speaking to all of them you would be deluding yourself.

I don't care what religious figures say really, I'll listen but it's not going to influence me one way or another.

Because there are more Catholics in this world than there are Jews.
The Catholics regard the Pope as their spiritual leader and as such he has a great influence on their political agendas as well as their moral compass and their daily lives.
However ... there are far more people who are afraid of the Jews so much that they actually think that the Jews are running the world .... which is bullsh*t obviously. (Demographics show that there is 0.002% Jews in the world's population; how the hell is that wee mark of men and women going to control the world?)
So; knowing the demographics of the Catholics is much higher than the Jews, and knowing the Catholics regard the Pope as their leader it's safe to assume the Pope has a lot of persuasion to a great number of men and women in all walks of life.
So people care about what the Pope says even when they aren't Catholic or Christian because they know he has a great deal of political and social control and he can exorcise it at will. People watch what he says and does because he has a good deal of "global" influence.

The Pope is not "talking specifically to a small percentage of people."
The Pope is, at minimum, talking to every Catholic in the world of which there are over one billion, that is 16% of the world's entire population. He is also talking to every citizen of Germany and anyone else in the world who is interested. This size of an audience also makes his message "mainstream," not "marginal."
The message of the Pope of faith and hope and love is also one that is direly needed in the world today.
With love in Christ.

When the pope referred to "traditional values" he wasn't only speaking to catholics but to people in general, saying we should all return or try to adopt some morales (traditional values) such as living by the ten commandments.

i've been surfing more than 4 hours today looking for answers to the same question, and I haven't found any interesting discussion like this. It is pretty worth enough for me.

Because he follows in the footsteps of the Apostle, Peter, to whom the Lord Jesus Christ gave the Keys of the Kingdom. I don't pretend to understand what that means, but I know the Lord loved Peter.
