Is Christians and Catholics the same?

Why do Protestants call themselves Christians and say that Catholics are not Christians? Do they not believe in the same Bible and have the same concept of God viz. God the father, God the son and God the holy spirit?

    Almost.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

The main difference seems to be the source of the authority that God has given humans in this world.

    Protestants believe that

+ The Bible is the only infallible authority

+ The Church is just a friendly gathering of believers, all of whom have their own authority to interpret the Bible for themselves

+ Interestingly, because all Protestant Christians interpret the Bible in different ways, they actually admit that they cannot all be right but somehow they are fine with that.

    Catholics believe that God:

+ Established His Church with divine authority

+ Has passed this authority from person to person in an unbroken chain from the Apostles to the bishops of today

+ Gave the Church the deposit of Faith (not all of which was included in the Bible)

+ Uses the power of the Holy Spirit to preserve and deepen the understanding of this truth within the Church

+ Inspired the Church to write the documents that would become the New Testament

+ Inspired the Church to select which documents would be included in the Bible

+ Inspires the Church to properly interpret Scripture

    With love in Christ.

Why yes, they are. What would make you think otherwise? Jesus is the Son of God. He alone saves. Nothing else. Protestants believe that. Catholics believe that. And?

But your premise is weak. Not all protestants say that. Please don't lump everyone together. Not all catholics say you must belong to the catholic church to be saved either. Only old school and the militant still snarl that. I think the catholic church has learned from other "religions" who think they are Christian, claiming one MUST belong to "their" church to be saved/know the "truth", etc. Goes over like a lead balloon while having no biblical basis whatsoever. It's also very unlike Jesus Christ. Even an old dog like the catholic church can learn, so protestant denominations are learning that the catholic church is not the evil she-beast either. Little did either branch realize that there would come more deadly and vastly more insidious, look-alike cults paralleling Christianity that we must join with each other to fight together.

Roman Catholicism, Greek orthodox, all the protestant/evangelical denominations are all Christians.

They disagree on which parts of the Bible are used, on doctrines, on interpretations of scriptural passages, the holy trinity... there are a lot of issues on which the Christian denominations disagree, hence there are so many denominations. Some denominations have feuds with other denominations because the points of disagreement between the two are major such as Catholics believing in the Pope and Protestants saying there is no reason to have one.

I as a Catholic have no longer the slightest notion of what Catholic Church your speaking approximately. Not as soon as in over forty yrs have i been informed to or compelled to do any Holy Water factor. Your feedback most effective Prove what ArchBishop Fulton Sheen as soon as stated. There are Millions who wrongly think what the Catholic Church is and Hate her for it,however just a hand complete that detest her that is aware of what she rather teaches. And no we don't use the equal Bible as we use our Bible which has the entire books that was once in it from the starting of the Christian Bible. As for the books of the New Testament sure there the equal. You say you was Catholic your self and but it looks out of your feedback that you simply not ever attended Church and not ever went by way of Catechism categories. So i say you have been at pleasant baptized within the Catholic Church however no longer raised in it so for all realistic motives i might no longer name you a Catholic and also you will have to quit calling yourself a Catholic however one that was once might be baptized in it.

For Protestantism to be true, Catholicism must be true.

Here's the fact SOME Protestants would like to deny: although the Catholic Church was indeed in need of reform in the the 1500's, Martin Luther, Hulrych Zwingli and John Calvin (the three "fathers" of the Reformation) all insisted on keeping many of the teachings of the Catholic church. all three absolutely insisted on the perpetual virginity of Mary and all three called her the Mother of God -- not just the mother of Jesus. All three kept the same New testament put forth by the great Church Councils in the early centuries of the Church even though ay of the three were certainly able to come up with their own version of it. All three maintained the insistance on infant baptism as do today's Anglican, episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Christian Orthodox and some Prebyterian communites have even today. the Methodist church has one of the most beautiful writings on infant baptism I've ever read.

If Catholicism is "not Christian", why maintain -- and even insist on -- keeping so many of its teachings?

Yes, Catholics are Christians. Even if Ford tried to say that Toyotas aren't cars, the rest of us know better. Catholicism is a sect of Christianity. So Catholics ARE Christians. And no, they don't worship Mary, let alone statues.

You'll notice that the only people who say otherwise are ethnocentric non-Catholic Christians who pretty much believe that only their own sect gets to be the "real Christians". No doubt, they'll be giving thumbs down to this response to make themselves feel better.

Christianity is, as the name implies, the religion that focuses on Jesus Christ as described in the Gospels. This is the one feature that all sects of Christianity have in common, and a feature that distinguishes Christianity from other religions of the world (Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, etc.).

Of course, not all Christians agree on what the best way is to go about Jesus. That's why you have the Lutherans, the Catholics, the Mormons, the Episcopalians, the Presbyterians, the Quakers, the Church of Christian Science, Seven Day Adventists, Baptists, Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Chinese Orthodox, Pentecostals, Jesuits, Calvinists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and hundreds of other sects.

Catholicism is simply one of those hundreds of sects in the list. They're the ones who also compiled the Bible in the first place, so it's funny people trying to use the Bible against them.

Source(s): For non-Catholic Christians who get cheap thrills by giving me thumbs-down: you're welcome.

Catholicism is true Christianity. Jesus established the Catholic Church in 33AD,not 38,000 denominations, or non denominations as in Protestant Christianity. As for Catholic Christians we believe in the following:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary , and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Even tho Catholic and Protestants both believe in and worship the same God , the Protestant churches have a more watered down version of Christ. The Protestant churches only recognize 2 of the 7 Sacraments that Jesus gave to His church.

With the 38,000 denominations of Protestant Christians their beliefs are all different being that all have a different interpretation of the bible.

The Catholic Church compiled and canonized the Holy Bible is the 4th century. The Holy Bible has 73 books

The Catholic Church has a long history over which time it has changed in many ways, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

Protestant Christianity began in the 1500's when a group of people began to protest against some of the wrong things they believed the Catholic Church was doing and teaching. These protesters became separated from the Catholic Church and formed their own Church which was more inline with what they believed was the truth. Just like the Catholic Church, Protestant Churches are not perfect, they have also changed many times in many ways.

The main issue is Catholics have believed and done some things differently to what Protestants believe the Bible has instructed. Protestants believe this is a result of Catholics believing what certain individuals and traditions have said, rather than what God has said through the Bible. The problem of traditions becoming more important than God's truth is something all religions have at some time been guilty of, including Protestants. The Catholic Church has admitted to some of the errors it has been guilty of in the past, and has changed. But there are still some beliefs and practices that Protestants would say are against what the Bible teaches.

An example of change in the Catholic church is, the fact that today, the Catholic Church does encourage Bible reading. But in the past the Catholic church has discouraged personal study of the Bible, in fact reading the Bible was at one time banned by the Church. Only certain people were allowed to do so. People that did read, or spread the Bible, were even killed by the Catholic Church, like William Tyndale who was one of the first people to translate the Bible into English.

The Catholic Bibles include certain books which Protestants say should not be there. They are called the apocryphal books, which are writings protestants do not believe have been approved as inspired by God. Since they are not referred to as Scripture by Jesus or His disciples.

At one time almost all Catholic Church services were entirely in the Latin language, and only a few people could understand Latin. This is no longer case.

Many who spew hatred of Catholics do so because they are unaware of what Catholicism truly is. They will take a verse or two out of the Bible and twist it to infer that Catholics are not "Biblical". Most of the common slanders include "idol worship" and "Mary worship".

Catholics, Orthodox and Roman alike, are not only Christian, they are the original Christians. They are the parents of the ungrateful offspring you hear spouting the slanders like"Catholics aren't Christian" in the same way and angry child denies who their parents are.
