Why won't my male dog lift his leg to pee?
My 6 month old, unaltered (don't worry, he's already scheduled to get fixed next month) Aussie mix never lifts his leg when he pees. As a result he sometimes pees on his front legs and needs to be cleaned often. Why is this?

Some male dogs never lift their leg, but 6 months is still pretty young and this is also nothing to worry about. (other than having to clean his front legs)

Contrary to popular belief, lifting the leg to pee is NOT connected to the dog's gender. The raised leg is a sign of dominance, and a way to make the scent of the pee stronger to let other dogs know there is a dominant dog in the neighborhood. Most puppies don't start lifting their legs till they are almost a year old, and depending on the dog's personality, some might insist on squatting.

Male dogs often don't begin to lift their leg until adult, or nearly so. Some never will do it. Mine did not lift his leg at all until he was around two years old, and still rarely does (4 years old) but has never urinated on himself.

Don't worry - it is normal for all dogs to pee in a squat. Our dog only lifts his leg to pee ON something - like a car tire, tree, post. Otherwise, he is a squatter.

A lot of male dogs dont know to lift their legs, and they usually learn the behavior from other males that do lift their legs,. If he hasn't seen another dog lift its leg, chances are he doesnt know. Its all good though, its fine if he never learns.

He just doesn't feel like it. Mine only lifts his leg when he pees on something like a tree or the fence. He likes to squat in the garden.

Male dogs start this behavior at different ages. Most adult males will still squat at times, or just stand still and pee. He'll learn to avoid peeing on his own leg in time.

Some dogs never do.
Now what I find funny, is sometimes our female dog lifts her leg lol. It looks funny to see a female lift her leg, but it doesn't stop us from loving her.

your dog is still a puppy, and dogs don't tend to learn this trick until they are older. And some never do, especially if they have been kenneled. Our ex racing greyhound never ****** his leg and we spent his lifetime washing his front legs... not helped by the fact he was mostly white!
