move the 12 over so its x squared+4x-12=0. If you have been taught factoring then you factor this to (x+6)(x-2)=0. Now set everything in parentheses equal to 0 so it would be x+6=0 and x-2=0. Solve those and x=-6 and x=2.

The very first thing you should do when confronted with a problem like this is to graph it. Putting it in visual form helps immensely in understanding it. If you don't already have graph paper, get to the local school supplies shelf of a drug store, stationery store, or whatever and buy some. You're going to find it a huge help.
If you don't have graph paper, go here and download a pattern: http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/square.html . Now, print it out and start graphing using values of x set at x=0, x=1, x=2, and so on. DO NOT FORGET to use negative values of x also, where x=-1, x=-2, etc. The point on the graph where the y-value is 12 at some value of x is your answer.
The solution to the equation is x=2. Calculate it: 2²+4(2)=4*8=12. As far as showing your work, I'll leave that to you. Spend some time at the web page linked below so you get a good understanding of the whole process. Homework is work; it takes time and concentration. But it will pay off in the long run.
Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadratic_equation#Qu... that link takes you to the section titled "factorization." But I strongly advise you to read the entire article and understand all methods of solving quadratic equations. Bookmark it and go back to it when you need a refresher. If you achieve a real understanding of this, it will stand you in good stead for all the math classes ahead of you. Above all, don't develop a fear of math. It may take a lot of work. You may feel like your head is going to explode, but put the effort into it. - Anonymous4 years ago
if truth be told you prefer to get the variable 'y' with the help of itself, so which you will start up moving the numbers that doesnt contain the variable to the different side. to to do away with the -19 you will do the choice to the different side (because of the fact the superb side is subtracting 19 you prefer to function 19 to the different side): so fifty two + 19 = -9 +16y is what you will have, you apart from ought to flow the -9 over so which you get: fifty two + 19 + 9 = 16y, upload the left numbers jointly 80 = 16y, now that's the place you get y with the help of itself, because y is elevated with the help of sixteen, you ought to divide the two factors with the help of sixteen: 80/sixteen = y, do the branch and you get: y = 5

5x=square root of 12
5x=2 to the square root 3
x=2 to the square root 3 / 5
I hope this helps!
