timing belt change on Mitsubishi space wagon crapped out?

I changed the timing belt on my fathers Mitsubishi spacewagon cus it broke,

I have set it correct at all the markings but the damn car wont start?

it just makes a puff sometime what can be the problem?

Update:

yes the no1 cylinder are on top, all the markings are correct,

Im going crazy with this car, :S

Update 2:

yes I was using a paper manual I got from a carshop, friend of my dad

there is no other manuals for this car so that was my only choise,

this is the kind of manual the carshops pay for,

and I did exactly as it said

Update 3:

I also checked the sparkplugs, ignition is there,

and I checked the gasoline, no proplem

but when I try to start it, NGNGNGNGNGNG PUFF NGNGNGNGNGNGN

it clearly seem to be something with the ignition,

the PUFFS are certanly implying that,

but I can't understand how it can be

because everything is at the markings??

Update 4:

yes the belt tensioner are tightened and it's on dead center.???

Update 5:

WIERD!!

Update 6:

thanks Asmiles1 but if that was the case wouldn't it still start?

Update 7:

holy crap! valves bent! just what I need, but thanks, at least not I know what to do

Were you using a repair manual? The timing procedure on these vehicles is complex, and it's possible to have marks line up with the vehicle out of time.

I is still outta time some where did you bring the pistons up on top dead center and then set the cam on the marks and then tighten the belt tensioner they some times will slip one or two teeth. Okay did you just replace the timming belt because it was due or did it break?

Okay just reread what you typed when the timing belt breaks many times the cam and crank go outta wack and it is possible a piston hit a valve that would give you the same problem you discribe howeveryou may have to reset everything again i had to reset my honda 5 times to get it right everything looked right but would be off.

The valves are bent. You must remove the heads to replace bent valves, then reinstall. This happens when the timing belt breaks during engine operation. The camshaft stops spinning, but the crankshaft spins, then smacks any valves that are open, and you lose compression. If you have doubts, since you've got the timing belt on correctly, check compression on a couple of cylinders. I'm positive you'll find zero compression on at least several cylinders.

u lined the marks up but did you have the crank at top dead center. you'll need a degree timing wheel to do this
