Looking for Advice on How to Care for a Dog?
I've cared for a dog before. I grew up with a Border Collie x Labrador Retriever and she was the sweetest thing alive!
But it was more my parents dog than anything. I'm moving in with my friend when I graduate from college and hopefully we are going to look into adopting our first dog together! *Squee*
I just need some advice on what food for example would I get him/her? What breeds have good temperment but also good health records overall? What diet he needs to be on, good dental etc.
Anything would help basically! I'm not too great at this.
Help please?
Jeez, calm down. I know this ain't going to be a walk in the park! I grew up on a farm for petes sake, hense why my dog was a border collie! I have the necessary funds to care for an animal, and she should be a great addition to the family.
Also a ferret rescuer for 3 years =P
And also, my roomate is a trainee ortho-whatsit that specializes in animals and vets and things. That's great lol.

Before you even consider getting a dog you need to do your research, it's pretty clear you've got little idea on what your doing. People get dogs thinking it's going to be a piece of cake, and it's not. They cost thousands in vet bills no matter what breed, each dog is different, they all require time and training, etc. Do your re search please.
When you DO get a dog, adopt. http://www.petfinder.com/ they might come with a care packet and are the sweetest things on earth.

Petfinder.com is a really good website that helps you find a dog that would be good for you, and is near you also.
As far as feeding goes, that has a HUGE effect on overall health of your dog as well as dental etc. To help take care of teeth, the Nylabones, or Kong toys are very good. Never get your dog raw hide, this puts tons of plaque on your dogs teeth, and they will eat it like candy, not to mention whenthey pull of big chunks, it is very common for dogs to choke on the raw hide.
As far as food goes, anything that has CORN listed as one of the first 5 ingredients, is TERRIBLE! dogs were not meant to eat veggies and fruits, they are carnivores for a reason, get the food that has REAL MEAT in it, this will improve your dogs coat, and his smell as well. Have you ever noticed dogs that have that distinc corn chip like dog smell? Its from all the CORN being put in their food, and it is NOT good for them!

What they eat can affect their coat and their skin. Dogs can get most of the same diseases we do. They can get cancer, they can get heart disease, and have heart attacks. They can even get diabetes.
This is why it is so important to understand why your dog’s diet is so important to their lives. Just like with us, dogs are what they eat. Unfortunately though a dog cannot tell you when something doesn’t feel right with them, or when they have a stomach ache from the food they eat. Most of us watch what we eat because of the health benefits that come with the effort, and it is the same thing with our dogs.
