Can I use a passport cover?

I always see these nice leather passport covers on eBay, some of which with coat of arms in front. Supposing I bought one with the British coat of arms in front, could I use it with my American passport?

You sure can. I have 2. But I remove mine now before going through American Customs. One told me it was in the way for them to scan it, but I don't know why. I think they want to see the original cover.

Anyway, even taking it off at the border, I still find the cover protective either when I am carrying it or if it is in my luggage.

Yes. You have to take the passport out of the cover before you hand it to the border agent.
