Has anyone read this historical romance?

I can't remember the name of it, but the book starts off with a stepmother who gets her lover to beat her stepdaughter to force her to marry. The stepdaughter wears a thick veil to the wedding and the guy she marries does not learn of the beating until way further in the book. He goes to talk to her father about it. Her father did not know about it either but when he does he takes the stepmother off to teach her a lesson.
