B&A: poll - When you read, is it like watching movies in your mind? Or not?

Just curious. I know that when I read, it's like watching a movie since I can picture everything.

But I'm curious to see how many answer that have the same experience, or those that read and it's just words on paper/text on a screen.

Thanks!

Update:

edit: seems like a lot of people answer with watching/experiencing, but not a lot of "just words". In truth, I have a great respect for people who find reading to be "just words" and yet still read - really having to work at understanding what they're reading :)

appreciate all answers! ♥

Not so much as I'm reading but when I'm reflecting on what I had read I can see it all clearly. Sometimes when I'm thinking about a scene out of the blue and I can't quite remember where it was from, I'm not sure if I watched it or if I read it. As I'm reading I'm more in my head, it's more... I suppose emotional? I feel it. Like if it's describing a really bad pain, say in someones arm, I feel compelled to grab my arm, or if it's describing a really bad smell, I crinkle my nose. Of course this only happens when it's well written. I very rarely cry during a movie, at most my eyes might water (if it's really, really sad) but books make me cry all the time. If anything, I would say I experience the effects of reading a book much clearer then when watching a movie.

Yes, when I read I can see everything in my mind, it just happens, but I find if I try to picture what is happening I find it goes all wrong, but when I read normally it just comes natural which is really cool when you're reading books like The Hunger Games

I always imagine what I guess you could compare to a movie. That's the beauty about books; they are designed to inspire in each and every person whatever their imagination can fathom just from hearing a description of events that have transpired. That's why I love books; the movies are fun, but they are merely the interpretation of another person's imagination.

Yeah, I see what the character are doing like a movie, and if the book is really good I won't even notice the words. It's similar to me with writing, especially when I'm really engrossed.

Whenever I read a story, I like to replay the scene in my head like it would be in a movie, especially parts with a lot of emotion. However, that can be disappointing whenever there is a movie for that book that isn't near as good as you imagine it.

It is similar to watching a movie but there is a greater intimacy. For me, it is more like being a bystander who experiences it first-hand. It is hard to explain, but it is the feeling of being able to think and feel who someone is and what they are experiencing as if I am a presence they have no idea is there. (That sounds weirder than what I am trying to convey lol)

    Yes :)

It's like that when I write too, even more so. It's not like that with a poorly written book, though.

A well-written book is never just words on a page.

    Yes It is!

    Only with certain books tho

I love the books that when I read I can imagine everything!

Kind of yes. I can see the characters how I expect them to look in my mind and can picture scenes quite easily.

If it's an interesting book that's well-written, yes, it has that effect. I love reading!
