When sending a message on Facebook?

I started to send someone I am not "friends" with on Facebook. I typed it out, but then decided not to send it, so I hit cancel. Someone told me the message goes through anyway. How could that be and why?

Update:

I meant to say send someone a MESSAGE....sorry

It doesn't go through if you never pressed send.

It is not true. The message does not go through unless the "Send" button is pressed. That is the whole point of the Cancel button. Facebook could get sued for that (Violation of Privacy Terms) so no one on FaceBook, not even the Administrators can see the message unless you've sent it.
