You said no romance, but I would still suggest Ergo Proxy, the romance isn't really the point of the show, and the plot is good, and the female lead is strong and proud. It's pretty short though.

Fullmetal Alchemist fits all of the criteria in your first point, and is about 50ish episodes. I would highly recommend it.

Dragon Ball Z is very badass if you're into fighting.

DEADMAN WONDERLAND, it's really cult. alice evolution, [slight "girly" stuff, but gets gory interesting later on] Bokurano, science fiction, slightly horror with REALLY good plot[though kinda old]. you probably already know death note, but APHORISM,is awesome, though ug, bit cliche girl stuff in the beginning[wait for the part he starts school]. Taboo no knife. now this one i recommend, violence, psychology, only slight relations with protecting a girl. To Death Do us Part is also the same, VERY INTERESTING weapons about technology, and all that stuff. Hitogatana is also pretty cool, last resort though because it has quite some girls, but awesome fighting scenes if you can digest.

Try Nurarihyon no mago. It`s really a GREAT manga. In anime it`s call Nura: rise of the youkai clan.

Contain 2 season. I really love this anime/manga, maybe you should try it.
