Is this a warning from the grave of President Eisenhower to the Republican Tea Party?

November 8, 1954, went as follows:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." President Eisenhower 1954.

Update:

Hard to choose the best answer because although some of you have it half right you end up with some ridiculous statement that makes you sound like a kook. Can't decide yet, but the contenders are...Smelly BO because of his statement on HLHunt/LBJ/JFK of which he is right, Tibeca with her recognition of the direction of the Tea Party, and Lynlions for his recognition of what Ike said , and wtinc is wrong because the employee does pay for unemployment insurance already.

It would appear to be applicable to the ideology of the current Tea Party. Eisenhower was not a far right winger and he recognized the existence of these "splinter group" ideologues.

If people think they are getting it for free it is always hard to take it away, it is only when the smart people who understand that nothing is for free that things like that can be changed.

Unemployment insurance should be paid by the employee, as he is the benefactor of that. It went from 10 weeks to over 2 years hard to believe but it shows how politicians don't mind spending your money.

The truth is that social security was only meant to be temporary. Even FDR said that when he started the program.

As for unemployment insurance, I support it as long as the people receiving it are not delinquent on their income taxes.

As for the Texas oil millionaires, remember HL Hunt and those guys were part of that group with Lyndon Johnson that had JFK "taken out." The Texas oil millionaires don't care what they do as long as they get their subsidies.

I agree generally with having these things so long as we as a country can afford them.

eisenhower wasnt a terrible general, 1000 men died an hour, 24 hours a day for three weeks in the taking of berlin, not throwing his troops into the middle of that for his own glory makes him one of the best leaders in american history. his comment however, is about to be made irrelevent. obama is well on his way to becoming a dictator, ending all political parties, except his own..

    Eisenhower was a pinko commie.

He held Patton back and let the Russians take Berlin.

He was one of the worst generals in US history.

No, he wasn't dead when he said that. He also wasn't exactly right either. Circumstances change, we are broke.

  • When did the TEA Party advocate any of that?

    Time for your deprogramming, comrade!
