Paper towels, kitchen roll and newspaper does the job well even though it might not look as pretty as reptile carpet and vinyl tiles! :) Bearded dragons also like to play with these and it's easy to clean up. The ink from the newspaper will not harm your beardie, the worst it could do is make their hands a bit darker.
Whilst I would not recommend using sand as many people will tell you its dangerous for bearded dragons, there is apparently there is sand specifically for them that should be ok. IN CASE you do choose this option, keep his food on a separate paper towel so he doesn't eat any of the sand.
Yes, I think that a 44 gal piece of carpet should be ok, but it may be a little bit small. I'm not 100% sure though. Try asking at your local reptile shop?

I've honestly never used clay, but now I'm going to look into it. sand is dangerous, as said before. The easiest things to use are cage carpet, you can buy the same thing at home depot. And the best I've found so far, is the sheets of tile looking kitchen & bath flooring. You can get a few square feet fairly virtuoso cheap, cut the size you need, feeders can't get under it, its easy to clean/sanitize, and comes in all sorts of colours and patterns. It also holds heat pretty good for what it is.

once you feed the dragon in a separate field the sand is generally high quality. Sterile youthful infants play sand could be offered value effectively from place of residing Depot or everywhere equivalent. you additionally can would desire to now no longer use it just to be on the risk-free factor however. they are able to whether consume it by using accident (or stupidity). as quickly as bearded dragons are adults, they are able to oftentimes stay completely good on the sand devoid of lots danger of impaction. Calcium sand isn't sturdy once you think approximately that too lots calcium is unfavorable and the grains of calcium sand are oftentimes very extensive and it is not absorbed speedy sufficient so it would not quit impaction.

Why not just use newspaper? It's cheap, easy to change, and dragons don't try to eat it. Just make sure to provide a hide spot.
