Pay varies on your location, the size of the employer and your experience. Most entry level coders (who have 1-2 years of coding experience) start out around $12-15 an hour, once you gain more experience, the pay goes up to around $16-20 an hour and increases with more experience and credentials, to around $21-25.

If you have a HIT/HIM degree, then the pay will be higher.

If you are a new grad without experience, the best advice is to take an entry level job, something in account follow up, medical records, insurance verifcation, charge entery, etc. to gain experience and move up to a coding job. Most of these entry type jobs pay around $9-12 an hour.
