I think they say that because the general idea of the country was from the people who invaded from Europe--they were Christian. They say it's a Christian nation because the people who "civilized" it were Christian. Naturally, no body bothers to remember the fact that the Indians were here first. They lived in this country we call America for centuries before the Europeans and other countries came along. Of course, no one would think to remember that though because they were either slaughtered or stuck on reservations. So technically, this was and is not a Christian nation--not that the majority wants to admit that.

Source(s): Wiccan--my "friend" has brought the issue up and thinks that because it's a "Christian" nation, the rest of us should leave.

The United States Government was founded upon Christian principles not based upon Christian beliefs. The original intentions of the founding fathers was a nation unbiased towards all religions. You have to look at the early history of the nation to understand that the first settlers in America were English Separatist Christians who were under persecution by the Anglicans, Lutherans, and Catholics in Europe. The idea was to have a national Government which was not a Theocracy in which people would have religious freedom. If the Government was a Theocracy than there would be religious bias which would result in persecution.

In the early United States Government Atheism was not recognized as a religion. One nation under "God", universal for all religions.

I don't know that the USA was founded as a Christian nation. I do know that most of our founders were serious Christians, and a few were not (Jefferson was a deist, for example). The Declaration of Independence specifically points out God, referred to as the "Creator". The Constitution specifically points out that all religions have the same rights, and the government cannot infringe upon those rights, nor can they facilitate one religion over another. Therefore, the US was not founded as a Christian nation, but it was indeed founded by Christians and deists who believed God gave us rights.

maximum of them have been deists? the place are you getting this concepts from? (I actual desire to comprehend. i will comprehend if a number of them have been. yet maximum?) despite if maximum of them have been deists, they in all probability attended church and have been formally Christians. this is in all probability why human beings think of that usa became into based as a Christian united states. of direction, those people who've study the form comprehend that it promotes freedom of religion, and there is no point out of Christianity (or God, for that matter) in the form. So of course, those Christians are incorrect in asserting that usa is a Christian united states. further, you would be incorrect in case you claimed that usa became right into a Jewish united states or an Islamic united states or a Buddhist united states. even inspite of the undeniable fact that, you're appropriate in claiming that Christian values are a similar values that are held by potential of maximum civilized societies. yet in making this assertion, are not you admitting that they are one and a similar? are not you in addition to mght admitting that one isn't unquestionably incorrect if one is claiming that usa became into in keeping with Christian values? besides, if I have been one in each of those Christians which you're addressing, i'd sense that your assertion will advance greater questions than solutions (as do maximum religious/philosophical questions).

Not all Christians believe in that lie. It's only fringe "Christians" with a dominionist theocratic agenda that like to promote that idea. Many settlers came here to be free from kingly and papal rule.

The reason most pilgrims came to this country was to flee religious persecution in England and Europe. When they decided to form a new government, religious freedom was very important as they wrote the constitution and other documents, such as the bill of rights. If you really read these documents, I'm sure you will find references to God and religion in several locations.

Since most of these pilgrims were christian, it is safe to assume that their thoughts of God and religion were those of a christian nature.

they mess it up. USA was founded BY Christians not as a Christian Nation. The founding fathers were Christian but they specifically wrote you have freedom of religion and that can include not following a religion

I think its mostly because of the fact that all of the original European settlers of the US were religious fanatics. And the original meaning of 'we the people' was 'we the white male Christian people', in the eyes of the writers of the Constitution (I'm not making that bit up, they were some misogynous assholes).
