Does anybody know which way to put in a vaccuum filter?

I have a bissell vaccuum. It takes a style number 8 replacemnet filter. I got arm and hammer brand and dont know which way to put it in because there is a white thing on one side of both the sponge filter and the cartridge filter. what is this thing? Am i supposed to remove it. The original filters didnt have that on them.

    I suggest you look up the Bissel company online and get some help there. They would know exactly what you're dealing with.
