Is America the New Rome?

And more importantly will it share Rome's Fate? I just received a book entitled "Ad Novus Roma: To the New Rome." in which historical recreations and ancient and modern fact combine with political and sociological commentary that creates an experience like no other. I've never seen this argument put together better as it tied the beginnings of Rome and America to the attacks of 9/11 and the sacking of Rome. But I'd love to get other's feedback on the topic. So here are the various links surrounding the book and I can't wait to see how the rest of you feel.

this is an extremely complicated difficulty. i do no longer think of that parallels with Rome are somewhat significant - the subject right this is greater approximately empires and imperialism. historic past shows that a rustic can no longer improve perpetually, and that en empire is extremely complicated to maintain. this is proper to Rome, yet in addition to Alexander the super, to Charlemagne, to Gengis Khan and to many others. Empires are somewhat complicated to maintain in a non-democratic equipment, because of the fact it somewhat is then harder to make sure that the splendid all of us is in ability. As i do no longer evaluate what we've at present a real democracy, i think of we are all in hardship. A peculiarity of the U. S. is that its empire is value-efficient, no longer actual, and consequently it somewhat is frustrating to foretell a curve for it. Ever when you consider that WW2, the U. S. began to administration their politics with the intention to create 'zones of impression' international huge. consequently they in no way unfold their borders, or had any colonies, yet they are nonetheless an empire. So how does a value-effective empire fall? It falls the two from inner issues, or from loss of exterior impression, or the two. And it somewhat is genuine that the U. S. is experiencing the two those phenomena top now, and has for a while. Internally, there is unquestionably the debt subject (the full US financial equipment survives because of the fact of China, and while China makes a decision to assemble we are going to see what happens), and additionally a super ailment, a poverty subject, and a turning out to be loss of team spirit. US states have come jointly greater for value-efficient convenience than for any genuine experience of identity, so it somewhat is not impossible that as quickly as those value-efficient reward basically are not there anymore, some aspects will destroy apart from something. whether, i do no longer think of that some apocalypse will ensue. greater likley, the placement will proceed to worsen over the years, exceptionally for center classification human beings. I strongly advise you to go away while the time includes look for a job - Canada could be a reliable determination, and additionally Germany and a few Asian countries. The West is imploding, no doubts approximately that, however the autumn of a rustic isn't as dramatic as you will anticipate it to be. while the Roman empire fell aside, a lot of human beings did no longer additionally be conscious, so do no longer stress too a lot approximately it. :)

Well the 9/11 attacks were nothing like the sack(s) of Rome. 9/11 was less than a bee sting. 3000 people died, but five times that many people are murdered every year by their fellow Americans. The various invasions and sacks of Rome by barbarian tribes were massively destructive to the Roman Empire.

But in many other ways, we are certainly paralleling the decline of Rome. The main parallel is our overextended empire.

Well, enough of this politics talk. Time to go watch some UFC... :)

I read somewhere that every major city in the US will end up looking like ancient Rome burning, due to blacks rioting over Obama's election loss in 2012.

Of course we are the "New Rome." But eventually all civilizations will fall. The next "New Rome" will be China.

No, countless books have been written describing how we have no comparison. Everything, ranging from our economies to our use of force is different.

Source(s): There is a book by Garnsey and Saller that will help you with this, as does Luttwak's book.
