Has science and philosophy begun to strip away the big questions?
I saw a great video on Youtube recently that uses modern biology and physics to hypothesize the purpose of life. I don't want to bend anyone's opinion so I'll just post the link:

1) Is this more feasible than the other religions
2) Do you find this comforting, frightening, does it not change a thing for you?

I'm not quite sure how one correlates to the other. How does HE die for MY sins? And if you can explain this does this mean that I can hit myself in the foot with a shovel for your mortgage?
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality8 years agoWhat does Coxiella Burnetii mean in plain English from Latin?
I know what Coxiella Burnetii is (the etiological agent of Q-Fever) but I'm curious as to what the words themselves mean. Can anyone help (I've tried several translators online and had very little success).
2 AnswersLanguages9 years agoIs America the New Rome?
And more importantly will it share Rome's Fate? I just received a book entitled "Ad Novus Roma: To the New Rome." in which historical recreations and ancient and modern fact combine with political and sociological commentary that creates an experience like no other. I've never seen this argument put together better as it tied the beginnings of Rome and America to the attacks of 9/11 and the sacking of Rome. But I'd love to get other's feedback on the topic. So here are the various links surrounding the book and I can't wait to see how the rest of you feel.

14 AnswersPolitics10 years agoSo I'm breaking up with her today and need advice on how...?
So here I am, post-divorce, and in a relationship that has come to its end. I don't really have a reason to break the cord that, post-divorce, doesn't seem fairly trivial. Still, I've really just lost interest and have already begun "acting single". On my end there's seriously nothing left. We had fun, she had potential, but in the end, I'm bored and uninterested. Now I know I can't/shouldn't say that, but I'm just being honest for YA.
So, I need some advice on how to handle this. I suspect she suspects something is amiss and I plan on doing it face to so that the exchange of possessions can be done right then and there. She's begun the whole "I love you" after every conversation and I remain as distant as possible. She's a great girl and I feel awful that I'm going to hurt her but she's just not for me. My ambivalence comes from me being the same position about two years ago except I was on the receiving end. I remember how hurt I was and how undeserving I felt to have had that happen to me (first post-divorce relationship). I feel incredibly bad doing that to someone else but I'm not doing her any favors by continuing this. So please, help do this in a way that won't be horribly devastating.
Oh yes, we've been dating for almost six months.

3 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoHow do you turn a powerpoint into a avi/wmp/mp4/YouTube vid?
Okay, I'm trying to place a powerpoint 2007 presentation for a class I have on Youtube. The problem I'm having with sites like authorSTREAM/authorPOINT lite is that while the slides convert to video the audio will not transfer into the new form. The audio makes the presentation work and plays across the slides (the presentation is designed to mimic a movie trailer)
1) Is there an alternative way (preferably without spending any money) to do the conversion?
2) Am I somehow missing something in the directions?
3) Is there another way to construct this without powerpoint?
17 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoIs there anyone of a single race that married a bi/multiracial person?
Obviously there are I used to be one of them (the biracial one). What I'm looking for is any stories or experiences that might have been different with them then a member of your own race or single race. Child rearing, family gatherings, things you noticed or notice about them. How you think of them. That kind of thing. Even if you only dated someone of a biracial background I would love to hear your story.
3 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoDid she create a monster... or just let it out of its cage?
I was with my ex-wife, to include dating, for 10 years. In the sack, she was a nun.We divorced (not just for that reason but I can't tell you it wasn't on the list)
We separate and I start having some fun. Then I meet the, now ex, girlfriend, and she was into some deviant things. She like to get smacked around, spanked (not during intercourse just spanked), called all sorts of crazy names, and all around debased and degraded in ways that would make most cry or walk away. We dated for 18 months.
Now I'm seeing a few people and was having a seriously hard time reaching climax, which, I have found, to a female is the ultimate insult. Then the other night I took charge and did pretty much all the nasty things my ex used to want (minus the face slapping, and tying up, and teab... *Ahem*). Anyway, long story short, BLAM!!!
I was uncomfortable with the a lot of the ex girlfriend's fetishes but now seem to need them myself. Did she do this to me or simply unlock it?
10 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoInterracial relationships are contriversial, so what do you do if you are a biracial person?
I'm am both black and white but look neither. I was born in a "ghetto" but have propelled myself to much higher heights (Ph.D, etc.). But my main relationships have fallen apart and it has, at base, been because of race.
My ex-wife's family is racist as hell and despite the fact that we were high school sweethearts, lived in Europe for three years together and had a gorgeous baby girl, they continually saw me as that "ni**a". We eventually divorced and they're pleased as pie with her because she is now with a white guy... from the trailer park... literally!
Then there was the girlfriend. I didn't know what it meant to love someone (not sharing my DNA) until I met her. We were passionate, beautiful together, and were two souls that found each other. She was from a well-to-do family (genuine American Ivy-league nobility) and they seemed to love me. Then we suddenly, without warning, broke up just before our 1st anniversary. We would re-unite several months later but again break up within the next four. She recently contacted me to apologize and explain that she was under tremendous pressure from her family to "have her fun" and then break-up with me and was in no position to deny them. Which, understanding her position, I couldn't blame her.
I've never had a problem getting the girl but keeping them is an entirely different situation and my two serious adult relationships have failed and race has been the problem. What do you do if your neither black nor white?
12 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoI need American slogans. Can you help?

Thanks in advance.
10 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhat is the point of marriage?
Granted I'm a jaded divorcee but I remember walking down the aisle thinking "I'm about to give up every single advantage I have." Think about it. When you're single and she "denies" you, you can walk. If something annoys you, you can leave. When you break up she packs up her things, he packs up his and you may or may not have to break a lease.
But in the modern world, what gain is there (especially for guys) in getting married? Sure it made good sense when Caesar Augustus was alive and women were property (She gains security and status he gains a dowry and heir) and divorce was simply a matter of signatures on parchment (child generally went to the man as it bore his last name/ dowry was returned to woman/ no stigma went along with being divorced). But today, marriage essentially castrates the man as she can now do (or not do) whatever she'd like. Prenup aside, should you leave, cheat (Bad Tiger), or otherwise protest, and one of you ends it, 90% of the time he'll lose half and possibly more should he have children.
So I am asking my fellow yahoos to renew my faith in this tired and archaic institution. What is the benefit for a guy to get married (I don't want to here sex, tax breaks, societal acceptance, religion, or to keep her... lol)? Because in all honesty, other than the tax break, in today's world you get a lot without being married with much of the Taboos having been accepted as ridiculous. People are more worried about gay marriage and Haitian deals with the devil.
So come on Yahoo, RENEW MY FAITH!!!

6 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoIf I delivered flowers to your home how long would it take you to respond?
I (28) need a little relationship advice here.
My girlfriend (24) canceled our usual weekend together in order to complete two term papers that were due. Being very understanding of this, I sent her a bouquet of her favorite flowers just because (truth is I was going to surprise her with roses when she came down this weekend but since she couldn't I adjusted fire). I received the confirmation of delivery email @ 3:15pm. I didn't receive any kind of response from her until almost 8:00pm and only because I called. I confirmed that she did in fact get them at 3:00pm and had had time to set them up in her room and around the house... but not send me a text of Thanks. I found it inconsiderate and rude (seriously I knew she was busy all I expected was a text) and in the cloud of other things taking place I don't exactly know what to do. In the last few weeks she's grown distant and I seem to be more of a burden then a boyfriend.
We had a talk a few weeks ago and she admits that she knew she wasn't being the best of girlfriends at this point and time with many things (family, school, etc) but that everything was fine as far as we were concerned. I was ready to break up with her then but took her for her word. Now with the flower thing I have no idea how to respond or if a response is even required.
--Vital info: We dated for almost a year, she got scared, she broke up with me for 4 months, she came back, explained, and we've been back together for the last two.--
11 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoI have a problem with my HP. Can you help?
After a few weeks of some weird behavior, when I went to boot my HP dv6000 the pixels were completely over sized. However I could not change this from the settings so I restarted. From that moment on I have been unable to get the screen to turn back on (leaves this weird vertical line pattern and slowly gets darker the longer I leave it on). So I hooked it up to a desktop screen so that I could at least pull my work off and it would not let me get back to windows in normal mode. I can however get to safe mode (from the desktop screen at least)... any suggestions?
1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoAfter 3 months of silence my ex-girlfriend has returned, what should I be thinking?
Quick History: We dated for almost a year, things were truly great (The best ever), and then suddenly she breaks up with me stating "I just don't feel the same way about you." She cuts all communication and after a week so do I. Neither of us has ever stayed in contact with an "ex" (I ignore my ex-wife 90% of the time and we have a daughter).
A week ago the ex-girlfriend reappears (after a 3 month hiatus) stating that she is taking a class on my campus and wants to grab something to eat and drink. But she is in class at night and I in the morning while I work when she would be on campus. She knows my schedule and knows that I never would have known she was on my campus unless she told me. why is she back? What could she possibly want? And what should I expect?
NOTE: She's 24, I'm 28. I've already agreed to meet so... help!!!
26 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoDecimated by Child Support and the IRS. What can I do?
My wife ran off with a barrel full of money in our divorce for child support. I gross $1500 per paycheck (2 per month) and she is getting $1350 per month leaving me with less then $500 net every two weeks. I also have 3 deduction which never got changed and the mean %!*@# quickly filed her taxes with my daughter so that I now owe the IRS $3000 because I was deducting the two of them for most of the year (2008) and have no way of paying them back. If I lower my deductions to single 1 dependant my net take home would be just over or under $300 bi-weekly and if you can live off of that may the gods send their blessings. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I pay the support but it is so much that I have had to cancel visits due to having no food or gas to pick up or feed my child with.
I figure that at some point I am going to go to jail for either failure to file or tax evasion but as you can see three hots and a cot is not a bad deal in my situation. However to avoid this I wonder if there is anything I can do. Can I avoid jail or is this inevitable and her revenge complete.
7 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoIn what book of the Hebrew Sacred Scriptures (Old Testament) was Yahweh first referred to as King of Kings...?
... Lord of Lords... etc.
I'm actually doing some historical background information on the Ancient Near East in accordance with the Jewish Diaspora. If you could site the book great. If you have the chapter and verse even better.
Although if it isn't mentioned until Christian Sacred Scriptures begin (New Testament) the info on that would be appreciated as well.
