Why do people believe rumors about Jehovah's Witnesses?
Even though these rumors have proven over time to be false time and again, still they circulate. Not only that, many are gullible enough to actually believe them.
I am still hearing that we are "eliminating the postion of Circuit Overseer." Check out this "question" from 3 years ago which still has not come true:
My brothers and and sisters have provided excellent answers, and there are a couple of good ones from others as well. Then there are the ridiculous ones.
I am not going to pick a "Best Answer" because there are several, but Yahoo! only allows me to pick one.

They are not rumors at all, they are outright bald-face lies propagated by apostates and individuals filled with hate. They make it their whole purpose in life to tear down Jehovah's Witnesses. They are serving Satan, their god. They are pathetic low life individuals.

It has a lot to do with the fact that they do not want to talk to us, with this in mind who else will they get the information about us from, so with this they will get all the lies and slander because people do not want to come to the source of the matter.
I also think that it has a lot to do with people being scared to talk to us for some daft reason.
We also know that the ones that who are Ex-witnesses who have been difd or just plain turned Apostate and stopped associating with us are out to spread what vile they can against what they have turned their backs on. It is almost like "if I can not be happy then none of you will be happy either".

This answer can fall into a # of categories:
1)They just don't care, to find out the truth.
2) They don't ask.
3) They don't know any body that is a Jehovah's Witness.
4) It is easier to believe whatever comes out of a person's mouth--sensationalism sells.
5) Their spirit of Independence--they do not want to know that we he/she is doing/ accepting
in their life is wrong/ bad for themselves.
They'd rather do what they want, when they want, how they want...etc...
Just like satan the devil...separate from God Almighty.
Because Jehovah's Witnesses live a life of austerity, separate from worldly things,
this sets us apart from most ppl in general.
So, most ppl just don't know the reality of what it is we are about.
Yes, they know we don't celebrate birth dates, holidays,
we do not accept Blood transfusions, we go door-to-door
sharing Scripture/ The Good News....
But, they don't know anything at all about,
"WHY, we do, what we do; and don't do, what we don't do."
Just Ask, The Next Time, a Christian knocks at your door.

We do well to becareful not to let slander come into our minds. People say things like that to confuse and test those who are new in the truth. I was attacked by apostates right after my baptism. My aunt ran to me and covered my ears. He was asking me questions that where simular to that. I will not repeat what he said, but i was confused until Jehovah helped me.
Mathew 10:16 says "look! I am sending forth as sheep among wolves; therefore prove yourself cautios as serpents and yet innocent as doves"
We have to have a look out for these things and not be an accomplice to their slander.

I agree with badger, these are not rumors. That's like putting lipstick on a pig, its still a pig. These are just plain lies, their intent is to hurt Jehovah's Witnesses, to draw away the weak or new ones if they can. Don't waste your time and effort giving them any more attention, that's what the want.

(2 Thessalonians 2:9-12) . . .But the lawless one’s presence is according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work and lying signs and portents 10 and with every UnRighteous DECEPTION for those who are perishing, as a retribution because they did not accept the love of the truth that they might be saved. 11 So that is why God lets an operation of error go to them, that they may get to BeLieving the LIE, 12 in order that they all may be judged because they did not believe the truth but TOOK PLEASURE in UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

Because it tickles their ears. Makes them feel good about what they've been taught by people whom they love or trust.
If they would accept the truth about Jehovah's Witnesses, then these ones lied to them. So it is easier to accept the lie than to accept the truth.
Most people don't complain about all the changes and additions found in the NIV, because these additions agree with what they were taught.

Out of fear of the truth. The same happened with Jesus. He said:
“With whom shall I compare this generation? It is like young children sitting in the marketplaces who cry out to their playmates, 17 saying, ‘We played the flute for YOU, but YOU did not dance; we wailed, but YOU did not beat yourselves in grief.’ 18 Correspondingly, John came neither eating nor drinking, yet people say, ‘He has a demon’; 19 the Son of man did come eating and drinking, still people say, ‘Look! A man gluttonous and given to drinking wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ All the same, wisdom is proved righteous by its works.”--Matthew 11:16-19.

Because it's almost always easier to believe and buy into what has simply been heard rather than to do research, investigating and fact finding regarding the truthfulness of the things heard.

A look of people enjoy the sensationalism of "discrediting" JWs by quickly accepting and spreading these rumors.
