Death of aunt's ex-husband and condolences?
My cousins' father just passed away.
I called them to offer my condolences.
However, when my dad emailed me their phone numbers, he also sent my aunt's phone number.
I assume my dad is expecting me to call my aunt as well.
My aunt has not been in touch with the husband in the 30+ years since their divorce.
Prior to their divorce he was, to put it politely, heavy handed with her.
Heavy handed enough that my dad had to pull a Sonny Corleone / Carlo Rizzi "The Godfather I" beat down on the husband.
I haven't the faintest idea what I would say to my aunt regarding the passing of her ex.

Just call her and see what her mood is and tailor your mood accordingly.
If she acts like it is time to party, just tell her that you are sad for her children.
If she acts sad, tell her how sorry you are for her loss. Try to call at a time when you don't think that she will be home so that you can leave her a message. In the message you can say that you weren't sure how she was feeling but if she wants to talk you will be available.

[Sonny pays a visit to his sister Connie. He is surprised to find her subdued and evasive]
Sonny: [surprised] What's the matter? Huh? What's the matter?
[He looks at her swollen face and understands what has happened. He pulls away to go after Carlo... ]
Connie: [grabbing his shoulders] It was my fault!
Sonny: Where is he?
Connie: [weeping with terror] Sonny, please. Sonny, it was my fault. It was my fault. I started a fight with him. Please, Sonny...
[Sonny, now under control, hushes her and kisses her forehead]
Sonny: Okay... I'm just going to get a doctor to come down and take a look at you.
Connie: Sonny, please don't do anything. Please don't do anything.
Sonny: What's the matter with you, huh? What am I going to do? Am I going to make that baby an orphan before he's born?
[Connie gives a chuckle, and Sonny kisses her again and good-humouredly shrugs his soldiers]
Sonny: All right?
[cut to Sonny beating up Carlo]
