What does my kitten need to travel with me by plane?

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) website there are no vaccination requirements for cats entering the US. They do state that certain states might have requirements so you should be aware of the requirements that the state you are flying into might have.

You should also review the specific airline rules on flying with cats. Some require a health certificate and some don't. You'll have to have an approved cat carrier to fly in the cabin. You can find their rules governing pet travel by searching their web site.

Please just disregard the joke on you asking about the pet passport. I asked my vet. I currently live in Germany (with a cat) and since I don't travel around Europe with her I don't need one. To go back to the states next summer I only need my cat to be current on vaccines. Rabies MUST be over 30days old so get that shot before 30days prior. You need also a microchip (one that can be read by the scanners in the states like AVID your vet should be able to get one that can be read) and within 10days of travel a health certificate. Do not get the certificate 10days prior to flight. Get it a day or two before just in case of delays. Also have your cat checked EARLY for worms and try to minimize outdoor time if it's allowed outside since they get worms from outside. I have an indoor only cat and she never gets worms, always comes back clean. Really that's all you need. I would carry a copy of your cats records (the current ones) as a just in case thing. That way should your cat get hurt while in the states you have that record to show your cat is UTD on it's vaccines. There is no quarantine period but going back to the UK (if it's a round trip) your cat may be subject to it.

Also want to add that some airlines allow pets in cabin and ONLY so many if there is no room the pet usually goes under the plane. Also make sure your cat carrier is airline approved (most airlines want them to screw closed for under the plane rather than snap also be sure there is bowls for the carrier) there will be stickers that say live animal you can get at the airport (usually) they will do a sticker that you tape on that says the name, contact info and if food and water should be provided (thus the bowls made for the carrier are required).

The only necessities for your cat would be proof of vaccination and health certificate. Being current on rabies is an absolute must. As for travel i would not , ever, put any of my animals in the hold. Not only is it very stressful for them, but it is not always temperature controlled appropriately and pets have had severe hypothermia ( even treated a Greyhound once for hyperthermia) and have even died. Check with your airline about having your cat in a small carrier that can fit under your seat so she can travel with you. I know that there are airlines that will allow this ( for cats and small dogs).

Pets are not considered human beings, no matter how much you may want them to be in your lonely life. As such, there is no such thing as a "pet passport". Your pet will be treated as any other piece of luggage by customs In addition, your pet will not be allowed to remain in the passenger cabin of the aircraft, as it is considered luggage regardless.
