why do people blame rumpeltiltskin for asking for the baby??? how come they put all the responsibility on him when everyone else in the story was just as irresponsible or even more about their promises?

In most versions, because it's implied he wants to eat it :). being a git/ stupid/ irresponsible is better than being a child eater..
you ought to read " The Crimson Thread" by Suzanne Wyen. it's a very different take on the story.
also- I forget the writer- The Rumpelstiltskin Problem. it's 5 takes on the story, all addressing that same issue. I think it's by Vivian Vande Velde, it's very good.
