What kind of oil to use for lawnmower?
I need oil for the lawn mower but don't know what kind to buy. It's a Briggs and Stratton 21" Troy Bilt 700 series w/ 7 torque. (This is my brother's who is away and I can't find the manual).

Oil Recommendation From Briggs and Stratton
SAE 30: 40° F and higher (5° C and higher) is good for all purpose use above 40° F, use below 40° F will cause hard starting.
10W-30: 0 to 100° F (-18 to 38° C) is better for varying temperature conditions. This grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80° F(27° C) or higher.
Synthetic 5W-30: -20 to 120° F (-30 to 40° C) provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.
5W-30: 40° F and below (5° C and below) is recommended for winter use, and works best in cold conditions.

Simple answer is SAE 30 detergent oil. I've been rebuilding small engines for over 30 years. Multigrade oils (especially 10w 40) will ultimately destroy engine as will oils designed for 2 cycle engines. Tecumseh and Briggs & Stratton engine manuals I own clearly state not to use multigrade oils as damage will result. The only time this would change would be if you were to mow your lawn in temperatures near or below freezing. Go to any Lowes, Home Depot or any lawnmower shop and they will have correct oil.

First insure that it needs oil. Most mowers do not require oil added during the year. If it takes regular gas its going to basically be straight weight 30 motor oil. However, if you go to a Home Depot type of place they just call it lawn mower oil. Make sure you don't overfill it.

Almost all brands of rider or push power mowers use straight 30 weight oil. Multi-weight (10w-30) is too thin, because the tolerances in mower engines is not near as good as auto engines. Remember to change it once a year for long engine life.

You need a 4-stroke oil. You can probably get a bottle from your local DIY store.
