What capacity do you prefer for an HD shotgun and why?

What is your personal preference for the capacity of shotgun used for HD?

I don’t have high capacity shotguns for HD. I use a simple Mossberg 500 with a riot barrel and back up guns. I took out the mag plug for waterfowl as it was originally set up for hunting. Then I added a 5 round side mount shotshell holder and installed a sling that holds 6 rounds. Its simple to load as you use a pump. And if I cant take care of the bad guy with over 12 rounds, well then I am a lousy shot. And if I cant work my way to my other guns with over 12 shotgun shots then Im dead so it would be a moot point then. But IF he has a bunch of buddies backing him up and I do make it to my other guns…..well lets just say I will have to remodel my home afterwards; it wont be pretty. Oh and I do have a flat shovel to scoop up the mess.

  • For home defence light weight isn't much of an issue, actually more weight helps tame the recoil a little.

I want mine to look like an over under form the side, in other words mag tube out to the muzzle.

The more rounds the better, better to be shooting than reloading.

For the same reason I only load 2 3/4" shells instead of 3", I can usually get one more in the mag., there is nothing to be gained from the use of magnum shells in home defense.

Source(s): I have 6 shotguns but only one high capicity that lives in my bedroom beside my Mac 90 and Glock 35

standard 5 is what is in my "bedside shotgun" ......and i do have 5 more in an uncle mikes slip on shell holder on the butt stock......yes it has 5+1 capacity....but i don't normally leave my long guns with a round chambered.....i DO have 2 belts that hold 25 rounds each hanging on gun rack on the wall.....which means if i grab shot gun and throw one of those over each shoulder...or bother to belt them on(which won't due cause of time) i now have 60 rounds at my fingertips...

** tho quite honestly when something goes "bump" in the night i grab 2 handguns and go "investigate"........and while this has NEVER happened to be a burglar/home invader......i have never felt "uncomfortable" with one handgun with green laser 17+1 .40s&W in one hand; and one handgun with flashlight with 11+1 in .45acp in the other.......and have also "clipped" my p3at to my boxers(it's light enough even with 9 +1 mag to not pull them down....

My Mossberg holds 5+1. A 7+1 might be better, but it's what I have and I don't foresee a problem.

Well...... For HD, it's a case of 'more is better', but can you really see

a situation where you'd need more than the standard " 'field block' removed 5 rnd.s ?

If you've got more than 3 armed opponents within 'immediate threat' range, you're toast anyway.

(Chambering that first round is all the 'warning' they get.)
