How important is the following on a resume?

I'm just updating my resume and there are a couple of things that caught my eye.

1. "References available upon request", this always seems like it would be an incontinence to whomever is hiring you. Should I just provide them anyways?

2. Listing interests. I can understand how your interests could be relevant to how much you are passionate about your job, but this seems silly.

Update:

Jana, haha, yes you did catch that!

i shall respond to the following as you have stated them.

    1. "Reference available upon request": as an potential employer may interpret this in two different ways.

    a. this person has no references

    b. this person has no job experience

therefore, it is good to list 3 references in your resume, more so ones of value. please avoid using steve the guy who knows how to skateboard, family members should be avoided and focus on people who will actually give you a good review.

make sure to ask someone to be your Reference before putting them down as a courtesy.

    2. listing interests, perhaps in a cover letter , and you can state such things as.

    - what you hope to gain from said job

    - why you want said job

    - what you can bring to the table

    - strengths you have

    final statement or comment

ex. thank you for your consideration hope to hear from you soon,

    much care

    [ your name]

and final but important do not only apply to one place.

Yes, list 3 personal references with current phone numbers. The person reading your resume doesn't want to ask you for anything, put it there.

Interests are important if they are relevant to the job. If you are interested in video games or basket weaving, leave those off, but if you are sports active, that's important, because the hiring authority is going to want to know you are active.

By the way - incontinence is a bladder issue =-). I think the word you wanted there is inconvenience, right?
