Danish Krag Jorgensen: Rebarrel?

Okay, so I just picked up a Dane Krag for a song...

But can I rebarrel it to .416 Rigby? How about .375H&H? .50BMG???

All sorts of options! And don't tell me these are stupid ideas, because if you do, I'll get angry, stomp off & cry for awhile.

Noob here, plz halp!

You could just leave it in 8x56R and load up ammo using reformed brass. Websites talk about it.

It has a .575 rim, 2.28 case length and 3.2 oal.

It is tough to make a boltface smaller. One must braze in a reducing ring. Lengthening an extractor is also problematic. The .532 rim diameter of the .375 is a problem. The .360 oal of the .375 is also an issue.

The boltface could be opened up to the .589 of a Rigby, but the 3.72 oal might be an issue.

Any cartridge that has a substantially different shape and size than the 8x56R will cause feeding problems and require re-working of the feed lips.

The Lazzeroni cartridges use a .577 rim, but the pressures are sure to destroy a Krag. The A-Square .300 pegasus has a .580 rim, same problem.

I am designing a .22LR conversion kit for the Danish Krag. Want one?

    HEY. Bertram cases are available.

The cartridges used in the Krags run around 40000psi, which puts it well below those other cartridges- the Rigby and H&H are both around 47,000psi. That's low, by modern standards, but still higher than I'd want to shoot in a Krag action. I suppose you could rebarrel it for one of the older low-pressure cartridges... but you'd be turning an interesting semi-antique into an expensive gun that wouldn't shoot as well as a gun made on a newer action, like a Mauser '98.

Me, I'd get some brass and some cast bullets, make up mild loads, and just shoot it.

According to wiki, if your rifle is a later production danish rifle with 2 locking lugs, it should be able to handle more modern high pressure rounds, such as 30-06 or 8mm mauser.

If it is an american issue krag, it isn't recommended since they had a single locking lug.

I don't think I would trust either with the 416 Rigby.

It would look great over the fireplace.....

Krag's are good rifles, but really???? 30-40 Krag is a sooper easy to find bullit.

I wouldn't recommend it on that poor action with those high CUP based pressure cartridges.

Source(s): It's your head and face though. But i'd rather you stomp off now and cry than later when it blows up in your face ; )

sell it for a glock because a glock is perfect and kills with every shot every time...as long as you hold it sideways
