Why won't my Dell Inspiron charge?
So last August (2010) I purchased a Dell Inspiron laptop & last week the power cord stopped working. I got a new one from Amazon & it came yesterday & totally worked fine, charged my laptop without a problem. Today’s the second day I’ve used it & now the battery icon on my computer shows that I have “6% of battery left, plugged in, not charging.” I don’t understand why it won’t charge after I’ve unplugged it & then plugged it back in, both the wall & into the computer & I've also taken out the battery & put it back in.
Is it the cord, or the laptop that’s being buggy? How can I fix this?
Thanks in advanced.

Remove the battery, leave the charger in, and see if it turns on. If not, replace the charger.
If it works, remove the charger and reinsert the battery. If it doesn't work, replace the battery.

I have one also. There is a little battery icon down on the right side of your screen. That should tell you how charged the battery is and how long it will last, though I do not think it is as accurate as it could be. Some where in the literature, I remember seeing a note that said you should remove the battery when using the laptop with the charger - darn if I can find that info now!

Have you tried putting the computer in the microwave? Dell's (for whatever reason) seem to serve their purpose better after being heated up for a few seconds. Also, wrapping it in aluminum foil first ensures the charge will stay in it.
If that doesn't work, I would recommend dunking it in super icy-cold water (sometimes the opposite of heat can do wonders).
As a last resort, I would say try to plug it in to a different wall, or buy a surge protector and plug it into that BUT ONLY DO THIS AS A LAST RESORT.

Sound like you may need a new battery, since its not holding a charge. But first, try draining the battery, then recharge it.

First of all, to Trinesaint- Very funny...
I think the problem is the battery, not the charger. It's either that or it isn't compatible enough with your new charger.

well the charger you got if it wasnt the same voltage output as the internal battery of the laptop then you may have shorted it out, ALWAYS when buying off brand stuff make sure the output voltage fits your internal batter voltage, ex: 9.6V batt 1000MaH you need a charger that outputs that exact same thing if you got a charger that output 12.0V then your going to have problems you may need a new battery now.
