Biblical lineage question?

I've seen this posted twice tonight:

"The whole bible is about God and the covenant with his chosen people. Adam was the first man in that covenant and that is what Genesis is about.

This is why one can trace lineage from Adam to Jesus, then no more records."

I thought God's covenant was first made with Abraham, and Jesus' genealogy as given in Matthew 1 only goes back as far as Abraham.

Can someone tell me where the lineage from Adam to Abraham is, in the Bible? Also where it is stated that God made a covenant with Adam.

“son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, son of Te´rah, son of Na´hor, son of Se´rug, son of Re´u, son of Pe´leg, son of E´ber, son of She´lah, son of Ca•i´nan, son of Ar•pach´shad, son of Shem, son of Noah, son of La´mech, son of Me•thu´se•lah, son of E´noch, son of Ja´red, son of Ma•ha´la•le•el, son of Ca•i´nan, son of E´nosh, son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God.” (Luke 3:34-38)

The list is also in 1 Chronicles 1:1-27, along with additional information.

The only covenant in Eden was made in the presence of, but not with, Adam, Eve, and Satan, and can be found in Genesis 3:15.

You can also read through Genesis and find the lineage that leads from Adam to Abraham, although it isn't completely in list form as above from Luke.

First, the person you quoted was wrong on several points, one of which is the claim that after Jesus, there were no more genealogies. I am sure many people in the world today who study genealogies would find it interesting to read that person's claim that there aren't any since Jesus.

The covenant between God and Adam was basically the same as the one between God and Noah, except that man was permitted to eat animal flesh, so long as the animal was dead before the flesh was eaten. (Genesis 9).

Second, the lineage of Abraham is given in Chronicles 1:1-27. In this recreation I have from another source, the numbers refer to the birth date in years since the creation of Adam as the first number, and the death date as the second number, for each person listed.

    1-930 Adam

    130-1042 Seth

    235-1140 Enosh

    325-1235 Kenan

    395-1290 Mahalalel

    460-1142 Yared

    622-987 Enoch

    687-1656 Methuselah

    874-1651 Lamech

    1056-2006 Noah

    1558-2158 Shem

    1650 approx. The Great Flood

    1658-2096 Arpachshad

    1693-2126 Shelah

    1723-2187 Eber

    1757-1996 Peleg

    1787-2026 Reu

    1819-2049 Serug

    1849-1997 Nahor

    1878-2083 Terah

    1948-2123 [approx 1812 BCE] Abraham

You need to remember that the genealogy is incomplete. As you already notice, there isn't really any lineage between Adam to Abraham. There is a bit, but most theologians agree that it is fully incomplete. Theologists also believe that other parts of the genealogy were taken out. In fact, you can actually visit the vatican, and see that their church documented that they took out parts of the bible that were originally accepted by all Christians. Its why, at times, the bible seems to skip ahead or leave large gaps. Theologians suggest the book of genesis was probably twice its size!
