How the @#!*% do ya solve my daughters 5th grade homework? Impossible?

Ok so I am not the best at math and she needs it done by tomorrow or else her teacher will yell at her. And she is very sensitive plus hates attracting attention to herself. Ok so here's the problem.

A. There are 11 students in Mrs.Doheny's math class. On the last math test, the range of grades was 20. The mean of grades was 80. List a set of grades that fits the description. Show all of your work and explain how you solved the problem.

B. Find the mode of the grades you listed in part A. Show all of your work and explain your thinking.

PLEASE ANSWER PLEASE if she doesn't have it done she will cry because her teacher will yell at her and she'll have to go to the principals office + sit out at recess. And I'm responsible for her getting her homework done on time so they'll call me and yell at me for not preparing my daughter for school.

The range means the gap between the lowest and highest number. So you can pick a range of numbers that is within 20: so let's say 60 and 80.

But if the mean (average) of the grades is 80, then that means there must be some grades below and some above. So let's change that range to 70 and 90 instead. The average of 70+ 90 is 80. You can add as many 80s and you want, and the average will stay at 80 (because 80+80 divided by 2 is 80 still).

11 could be split into 5, 5 and 1. So you could do an equal number of 70s and 90s, plus one 80.

[(70+70+70+70+70) + (90+90+90+90+90) + 80] divided by 11 (the number of students) gives you can average of 80.

    Likewise 70+90+80+80+80+80+80+80+80+80+80 divided by 11 is 80.

    Likewise 70+70+90+90+80+80+80+80+80+80+80 divided by 11 is 80.

    Likewise 70+70+70+90+90+90+80+80+80+80+80 divided by 11 is 80

    Etc, etc

    B. The mode of set of number is the number that shows up the most. So pick a set of numbers and count how many times each number shows up. That is the mode.

FYI, if the range is 20, the set of numbers cannot be all 80. Then there would be a range of 0.

A: the mean of the grades is otherwise known as the average. If the mean is 80, that means that the total of all 11 grades adds up to 11 x 80, or 880. So you need to come up with 11 grades in total, which add up to 880. Now you're told that the range of grades was 20, in other words the difference between the highest and lowest grade is 20.

As there are 11 grades, and it's easiest to work in pairs, lets just say that one of the grades was the mean value of 80, to get that out of the way. Then that means the other 10 grades have to add up to 800. So you could just say that all of the other 10 grades were 80 too, which would fit the mean. However, you also have to fit them around this range of 20. The easiest way to do that is say that for each pair of grades you have left out of those 10, one was 70 and one was 90. That way, the average of the two was 80, and there are 20 between them which fits the range. You could say that 5 of the grades as 70 and the other 5 90 and that would still fit.

B: the mode is the most common grade in the lot. So if you use the above example, you would have 2 modes - 70 and 90.

Normally, I wouldn't do someone's homework for them, but I feel for her. I hate having the spotlight put on me. Okay, so here's what I would do.There are a few possible solutions, I just did the easiest one.

    A.

    1. Write down all the info.

    -11 students

    -range (highest-lowest) is 20.

-mean (all scores added together divided by number of students) of the grades is 80

    2. Look at the info. There are 11 students with a mean of 80. So, work backwards. The total of the test scores is 880. That is 80 times 11 (number of students times mean). Therefore, a set of test grades could be 80, 80, 80, 80, 80, 80, 80, 80, 80, 80, 80

    B.

    1. The mode is the most occuring number. Therefore, in the above set of test scores, the mode would be 80,

I honestly have a different way of doing this, but this is the way a fifth grader would understand!

I'm pretty sure that range is the highest grade minus the lowest grade. The mean is the average. Mode is the most (the number that appeared the most)

So if the range was 20, and the mean(average) was 80, someone in that class got a 100 because 100-80=20.

I'm not really sure. Its been about a year since I worked on this type of problems

so, your dtr getting answers from others is the way you determine 'school'...all because you don't want her to get in trouble with the teacher...hon, you seriously need to grow up...I'm sure your school offers a website for assisting in this math craze...& I'd suggest you give your dtr a few more simpler problems to solve to be able to lead up to this one....giving her the answer & fretting over it yourself teaches your dtr a lot..but in the wrong way!! you, your dtr & her math teacher seriously need to sit down & have a talk....

If she doesn't understand how to do the work, she should ask questions in class, not rely on yahoo to supply the answers for her.
