WiFi for desktop computers? Help out a computer noob?
I know how to use a computer, I just don't know the technical stuff. I own a desktop computer while my dad and two brothers all own laptops. We have a wifi modem in our house, and my computer is the only computer that is connected to that modem via cable.
Is there anything I can purchase in the local computer store that I can attach to my desktop computer so that it would receive WIFI signals instead of connecting it to the modem via cable? What's that stuff called? Sorry I'm not into tech stuff so I don't know these things.

What you're looking for is a USB wireless network adapter. I've linked a list from NewEgg.com that'll show you the variety out there.

You can buy a USB WiFi adapter or a WiFi Network card.
USB: Search Amazon for Wireless USB Adapter
Network Adapter: Search Amazon for: 80211g Wireless WIFI PCI Adapter Card For Desktop
But why would you want to downgrade your connection? Unless you have a Wireless N card, you will connect at a lower speed (802.11g only connects at 54Mbps, where your cable connects at 100Mbps and has a guaranteed connection). If you change to a wireless your signal may vary as your using it and it can go up and down, where when your with a cable, you almost always will get 100M.

Your wired connection is probably faster than a wireless would be but, if you insist, you can easily buy a USB wireless connector. They are as low as $9.99 on Tigerdirect.com. You can get one at Staples, Best Buy, Walomart, etc. for a lot more.
