If a favourite director of yours releases a movie and gets negative reviews, will you still see it?

Negative, as in any score lower than 50% on rottentomatoes. And not your favourite director, but a favourite.

I was thinking about this today and Clint Eastwood's career as a director. About 7 or 8 years ago, he was churning out masterpieces such as Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. The critics, the public and various movie fans saw these films, and praised them. Since then, he's only really released one great film, and that's Gran Torino. The rest have been patchy as hell. I haven't seen J. Edgar (and I probably never will) due to its negative reviews. At first glance, it didn't look like my type of movie when the trailer was released but I thought that it may be good. But reviews kind of make me prepare for disappointment. Sure, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and Natural Born Killers got negative reviews, and they were more than decent films, but heaps and much more negative reviewed films from directors that are respected turn out (well for me) to be utter stinkers. Think Francis Ford Coppola with Jack- awful on such a high level.

Main question: If a favourite director of yours released a movie that got negative reviews, will you see it? Wait for it on DVD?

Main question 2: Say if you just *discovered* a director, and you go and see what movies from the past he/ or she has released, and one of them has gotten bad reviews (it's out on DVD and all). Would you see it?

If you are wondering why I split it up, the first one refers to it being released in cinema, the second one refers to it being released for a long time.

    Hello :)

I'd see ANY movie I was interested in, regardless of negative reviews or ratings. Movies are primarily still for entertainment purposes and one person's idea of 'genius' might be the most boring thing in the world for someone else, and vice versa. There's tons of movies that I really like that have low ratings on IMDB. And tons of movies with really high ratings that I can take or leave. I never listen to reviews and rarely read them. I value my own opinion more, as if some critic can tell me better whether I like something or not?! As for favourite directors, I'd definitely see any movie I wanted to by them, whether downloaded or in the cinema or on DVD. I don't go to the cinema as much as I used to anyway.

MQ2 - Yes definitely. I'd definitely see it!

BQ: 'Love, Honour & Obey' or 'Final Cut'. But I think he was brilliant in Sherlock Holmes, he often irritates me but I really liked him in that! And Artificial Intelligence :)

See, the movie I mentioned there, Final Cut, that has an average rating on IMDB of 5.8 but it's actually one of the smartest and most original movies I've ever seen. The kinda movie that you show to your friends and they're like, yeah this is great! Ratings are just opinion at the end of the day, just in the same way that people like different music.

Reviews this, reviews that... All that critics do is express their opinion, and as much as they may have studied it's still just an opinion! Jesus, rottentomatoes.com's rating is not a universal judgement! See the damn movie and then make up your own mind! Last week I was at the cinema and the first thing I heard from the guys sitting next to me was 'I wonder what the rating on IMDB for this is!' 'Dude I was thinking the same thing!' seriously? Is that the effect that movies have on you? You instantly want to hear someone else's opinion about it? If a movie that seemed like **** to you gets 4 stars by Roger Ebert do you suddenly reconsider your thoughts? What the hell is wrong with you? If you like it, good for you, if you don't good for you, but it's what YOU think that matters, not the rating of a bloody website!

Yea I agree Clint Eastwood has not made something good since Gran Torino. I'm saying this without watching J.Edgar or Hereafter. They both look like garbage. To answer your question yes I would go see a movie of my favorite director if it had bad reviews. Martin Scorcese Is my favorite director and I thought Hugo looked terrible from the trailer but when I saw it it was awesome!

  • Don't trust critic reviews, more times than not they don't know s**t.

Case in point: The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou is Wes Anderson's (he's my 2nd favorite director) lowest rated and generally most disliked film. It also happens to be my favorite of his films, but I never would have seen it if I went by the reviews and ratings alone. Sometimes you have to just give the movie a shot, you may hate it but you also may end up loving it.

MQ: Yes. I watch every new Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson film just because they made it.

MQ2: Yeah, I watch them anyway. No way to know if you like them if you don't watch them.

Depends on the director and how willing I am to follow them. Also depends on the film too.

One of my fave directors for example, doesn't review well in mainstream media... So it would depend on the reviewer...

I have gone back with said director and didn't like most of their earlier works prior to the first movie I saw...

I will see any movie even if it gets a negative review. I go by what I think is good and not what a critic or anyone else says. Although a lot of times they are right lol!!

I though Letters to Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers (to a lesser extent) were both pretty good films. Anyway...

I hardly ever go to the theater these days, so I probably wouldn't. I usually rent them before too long, though. I've seen pretty much every Scorsese movie and I usually don't wait too long to watch one of his film after they're released, but I still haven't seen Hugo. Perhaps this weekend...

MQ2: It depends. If I watched all of their "best" movies and I still want more, then I definitely would.

I saw Red Riding Hood for my favourite actor, Gary Oldman and that got an 11% on RT. I enjoyed to a certain extent.

I think I would do the same for a director.

Yeah, probably. Even if its not the director's best work, I love watching them for the things they do well, and to throw away a movie for its spottiness ignores any virtues that might be in it, and I get OCD about that kind of thing. I can't. Miss. Anything @_@.

I would still see the movie. Reviewers see movies for much different reasons than I do.
